2018/19 Scholars at Welcome Reception

On 9^th October 2018, St. George's Society hosted our second annual Scholar Welcome Reception. The event welcomed 2018/19 scholars from Lehman and Hunter Colleges, notable alumni and members of the Scholarship Committee to meet one another and discuss goals for the future.

Naima is pursuing her BA in Political Science along with a certificate in Human Rights. She commented that her scholarship gave her the freedom to undertake internships with social justice organizations that would further her career in the human rights field.

Aaishah, a Biochemistry student and mother, noted that her scholarship was a big step towards her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor—a dream that she no longer needed to put on hold:

“This journey has not been easy but I am determined to reach my goals so that the women from my community see that anything is possible with the right support.”

The reception was a part of a larger effort to foster a network amongst scholars and the wider St. George’s Society community. In addition to financial support, scholars are provided complimentary memberships to the Society, connecting them to an influential group of people from a range of industries.

Executive Director Anna Titley remarked, “We are invested in the success of our scholars beyond graduation. We hope that through membership, we can aid the cultivation of transferable skills and help our scholars establish the best possible foundation for career success”

Since the Scholarship Program was established in 2008, St. George’s Society has awarded 350 scholarships totaling almost $1 million in financial aid.

Scholarship Recipients Selected for 2018/19 Year

Thanks to funds raised at this year's English Ball, the Society awarded 36 scholarships totaling $149,880 to final-year students at Lehman and Hunter Colleges for the 2018/19 academic year.

The process of awarding the scholarships was administered by St. George’s Society’s Scholarship Committee working closely with the colleges’ Financial Aid offices.

“The applications we reviewed were all of a very high quality and well thought out. Thanks to the generosity of the members and their guests at the Ball we could provide support to more students than in any prior year. We look forward to meeting the scholars and following their progress through graduation and beyond,” said David Drinkwater, the Chair of the Scholarship Committee.

The majors of the incoming scholars span a variety of fields including Psychology, Political Science, Business Administration and Chemistry.

Lehman College student and aspiring social worker, Antoinette remarked, “The scholarship will allow me to turn my focus from worrying about paying for class to creating programs to better the people of New York and hopefully remedy the societal imbalances of this nation.”

Hasib is currently pursuing a dual BA/MA in Mathematics at Hunter College. She said, “As one can imagine, balancing three jobs while being a full-time student can take a toll on the brain and the body. The St. George’s Society Scholarship greatly reduces my financial burden allowing me to enjoy my education.”

Since the Program was established in 2008, we have upheld our commitment to breaking down the financial barriers that often prevent promising students from completing their education. We look forward to seeing what is in store for this next generation of leaders.

English Ball sets scholarships fundraising record

2017 Lehman College scholars at English Ball

St. George’s Society of New York hosted its annual gala, the English Ball, on St. George’s Day, 23^rd April at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. This year, the Society honored two remarkable individuals for their impact on the Anglo-American community: Dan Glaser, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies and Lady Weatherstone of The Weatherstone Family Foundation.

In addition to celebrating the outstanding achievements of the honorees, the Society held a “Fund-A-Scholar” auction conducted by C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s. This year’s auction raised a record-breaking $148,776 for the Society’s Scholarship Program, which will be awarded to final-year students at Lehman and Hunter Colleges later this year.

Preceding the auction, 2017 Lehman College scholar and aspiring doctor, Natalie, spoke about the impact the receiving the St. George’s Scholarship has had on her:

The St. George’s Society Scholarship Program allowed me to focus on completing my education—not worry about the finances involved—and save the money I’ll need to apply to medical school.

As many of you might know, the cost of college is more than just tuition, and becoming a St. George’s Society scholar is more than just financial aid.

It means that a group of people—people like you—who have never met me, believe in me and believe in my ability to accomplish my goals. That kind of support—that kind of faith—is powerful.

I know I speak for all of [my fellow scholars] when I tell you that your support has changed our lives.

As we continue to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Scholarship Program, we thank you for making a difference in the lives of the next generation of world leaders.
