Empowering Women Scientist Protect Amazon Wildlife

By Emily Knudson | Director of Outreach and Philanthropy

Dear Supporters,

We are thrilled to share an inspiring update on the incredible impact your generous contributions have made through our project, which provided research scholarships to women scientists dedicated to conserving Amazonian reptiles.

One of the beneficiaries of this initiative, Viviana, has an extraordinary story of determination, resilience, and passion for conservation. Viviana was on the brink of completing her Biology degree when financial and logistical challenges nearly derailed her dreams of conducting meaningful research. She was interested in studying large fauna, like jaguars and black caimans, but faced countless barriers such as funding shortages and restrictions in accessing remote areas.

That’s when she discovered the scholarship program you supported. Viviana applied and, despite initial self-doubt, was awarded one of these life-changing scholarships. With the funding in hand, she shifted her focus to Amazonian turtles—species crucial to the health of aquatic ecosystems but often overlooked in research.

With the scholarship, Viviana was able to fund her fieldwork at the ProAves Jaguar Reserve in Mapiripán, a region deeply affected by deforestation and human-wildlife conflict. Her work, however, wasn’t without challenges. During her research, Viviana encountered logistical obstacles, such as the high cost of equipment and navigating through remote and rugged terrains. Yet, thanks to her resourcefulness and support from other women scientists, she was able to borrow equipment and carry out her study.

Her research focused on understanding the habits and habitats of turtles in the region, providing critical data that can help inform conservation strategies. Viviana also engaged local communities by hosting workshops with children, inspiring them to become "turtle guardians" and instilling in them a sense of responsibility for protecting wildlife.

Viviana’s story exemplifies the transformative power of your support. Because of you, she completed her research and became a role model for other women scientists. She not only contributed valuable insights to the conservation of Amazonian reptiles but also empowered communities to join the effort.

Now, we invite you to continue supporting trailblazing women scientists like Viviana through our ongoing project, "Amazon Rainforest Field Station 4 Women Scientists." Your contributions will help fund future scholarships, enabling more women to lead groundbreaking conservation efforts that protect endangered species and their habitats.

Together, we can continue to empower women scientists, protect biodiversity, and foster sustainable conservation solutions. Thank you for standing with us and making these achievements possible.

With gratitude,
The Women for Conservation Team
