Rani (name changed) is 24 and lives in Amba Ka Vela village. This village has poor health facilities and so Seva Mandir started an immunization camp which caters to the pregnant women and the children. Rani came to the immunization camp during her second pregnancy and during the check-ups it was seen that her haemoglobin level was very low and she was anaemic. The immunization team advised her to consult a doctor immediately as she and her child were at risk. But she did not attach much importance to the advice and never went to the doctor. On her second visit to the camp, the team again asked her to consult a doctor and also advised her family to make sure she did. She was then taken to the hospital in Kurabad village by Seva Mandir ‘s staff from where she was referred to the Udaipur hospital. Rani went into labour in her seventh month and was put on a drip as her condition was poor. She gave birth to a stillborn child but the doctors were able to save her life. She became very weak after the delivery but gradually regained her strength. The immunization team's timely advice saved her life and this experience has also proved to be a learning experience for Rani for future pregnancies.

With the support from Friends like you, last year:

  • 287 immunization camps were held in 108 locations
  • A total of 5,810 shots were administered
  • 942 children completed their immunization
  • 2,796 children suffering from common ailments such as fever, cold, cough, diarrhoea and skin infections were treated in the camps
  • The camps also provided antenatal services to 2,683 pregnant women

Thank you so much for bringing change in the lives of these women and children, and for your continued support. Please consider telling your friends and family about our project - tell them why you chose our project, what it means to you, and how they can also become a part of this CHANGE!

Thank you

Dear Friend,

Only 35 percent of children are fully immunized from deadly diseases in Rajasthan. This statistic is made more alarming in the fact that 193 children dies every day in Rajasthan because of various diseases. Seva Mandir has continued to push for further for more immunization efforts. Since its inception Seva Mandir’s immunization program has immunized 5,100 children and 2,700 pregnant women.

Please see a short film on Seva Mandir’s efforts to help these children and women:

Dear Friend,

An immunization camp was recently organized by Seva Mandir on 12th April in Kheradia village of southern Rajasthan. There is severe lack of basic healthcare facilities in this area. Around 300 families live in this village but the nearest government health center where immunization is undertaken is far away from the village. Many of the women and children in this village are simply unable to undertake these journeys and therefore often missed out on routine immunization.

This time around 25 kids and women got vaccine shots in the camp. All the kids were given vaccine shots; pregnant women were also counseled and given tetanus shots.

Meena, a resident of Kheradia village who came with her child for immunization said “Without the camp she would have probably missed her critical tetanus shot during pregnancy and her child would have also not be immunized”. Meena was motivated by a representative of Seva Mandir to attend the camp and received ante-natal check-ups as well as immunization. Meena knows that the camp is a boon for her village as it helps protect the lives both of the pregnant women and of their young children.

Another woman Kavadi came with her daughter Gudiaa to this camp to get her daughter second vaccine shot. She said “The people in this village rely on home remedies, traditional healers or quacks for treatment and go for qualified care only when the condition deteriorates. Thanks to Seva Mandir and its staff who create awareness in the village and for making things easy for us.”

To motivate these women to get themselves and their new borns immunized, Seva Mandir gives 1 kg lentil pack to the woman on each vaccine shot they take for themselves or for their children. After the complete immunization, women are given a utensil set as an incentive.

Thank you so much for bringing change in the lives of these women and for your continued support. Seva Mandir will continue to conduct free health check up and immunization camps in such difficult remote villages with your support.

We look forward to receive your feedback and comments. Please do reach out to us at atul.lekhra@sevamandir.org.

Dear Friend,

Today, I would like you to know about Jaruli who lives in one of the village of Kotra block where Seva Mandir works. She has given birth twice and both times the baby did not survive. During these pregnancies, she never received any maternal health care assistance, such as antenatal care or TT vaccinations, as government health services and facilities in the area were out of reach. She got pregnant again, but this time Jaruli attended immunization camps in her village, an initiative been launched by Seva Mandir since 2009 in order to raise awareness and improve immunization services. She was given proper vaccination shots during her pregnancy. She was also counseled on nutrition and advised to take iron tablets to combat her anaemia.

Furthermore, Seva Mandir’s Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA), a woman from the village who had been trained by Seva Mandir to serve pregnant woman, assisted her throughout the pregnancy, checking on her every month when she visited the village for immunization camps. Thanks to her primary assistance, eventually Jaruli had a safe delivery.  Jaruliis now happy with her healthy child and she's deeply grateful to Seva Mandir’s TBA for all the help and support she was given during her pregnancy.

Seva Mandir will continue to conduct free health check up and immunization camps in other remote villages of its work area in order to help many such women like Jaruli.

Your support to Seva Mandir is essential, since only people like you can really turn Seva Mandir's efforts and commitment into reality. With your help we can make a difference and provide a valid treatment to tribal women and children who would otherwise have no option available to get the basic health care.

Lalit with his mother
Lalit with his mother

Lalit, the baby in this picture wasn’t always as happy as he looks. Just sometime after his second month birthday, Lalit started suffering from swollen tummy. The baby’s cries would echo across the village each evening. On the Balsakhi’s visit to the village, she was told about Lalit’s condition and soon the necessary treatments were catered to the child. This was indeed possible because of your support to our initiative of providing medications to places where one can’t imagine finding a doctor.

Lalit’s tale is just one of many. There are hundreds of children waiting to be immunized each month.  And to continue this, we are indeed in need of your assistance.

Wondering how you can help us?

Global Giving is having its little by little match making challenge from the dawn of 26th October 2015.  Every contribution made by you exceeding £50 will be partly matched by Global Giving Family and together the amount will go to ease the access of education to children.

We look forward to your benevolent gesture in making a dream come true.  For any query, feel free to write to me at atul.lekhra@sevamandir.org

Regards,

Atul Lekhra
