WE NEED YOUR URGENT SUPORT TO SAVE THE KAYAYEI

By Eva Lokko | CEO

CEO Interview of Kayayei at Tema Station Market
CEO Interview of Kayayei at Tema Station Market

We have learnt with deep shock that the plight of the Kayayei is worst than we have estimated. Having interviewed several of them, we have established that there is serious trafficking of these young women, mainly by ruthless men who extort fees from these girls for boarding and lodging as well as for “protection”. The girls therefore cannot make independent decisions to opt for better livelihoods. This has made it difficult to bring the girls on board.

We have however discovered a new network of Kayayei and unearthed a new set of vulnerable young women, right in the centre of the capital city – Accra, under the Greater Accra Community Development Programme – GACOP. These set of Kayayei are made of migrant girls who run away from home due to poverty, physical and mental abuse, who have come together for mutual protection. They select leaders among themselves and handle their own affairs. They live mainly inside the markets where they ply their trade. We are making requisite arrangements to get a fixed number of girls every six weeks to participate in the project. GACOP has also identified 8 unemployed, needy and destitute young women whose families cannot support. One has four children, another 3 and the rest one each. The fathers have gone missing from day one. The project will now start in October 2015 with the US666.00 we have raised so far.

Within the above context, we now have a new budget item – mobilization fee, which will cover fees to the networks to ensure continuous registration of participants for the Save Homeless Girls (Kayayei) From Poverty” project. The additional estimated cost is US3,000.00 a year.

We know how supportive you have been over the years as a donor to this and other projects we have on the Global Giving platform and we sincerely hope that you will continue to support us in our bid to deliver better livelihoods, to marginalized, destitute, homeless young women. The incidences of rape, physical molestation and mental abuse, is so pervasive that it is difficult to just turn a blind eye to the plight of the homeless young women. Maternal, infant and child mortality is very high among these vulnerable young women and we would be grateful if you can find it in you to donate as much as you can. As the saying goes in Ghana – “no small input is too small”. Every cent counts.

Please visit our page on the Global Giving website – www.globalgiving.org/projects/save-homeless-girls Thank you for your generosity and continuing support. If you are a new donor, please accept our warmest welcome. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all readers to become recurrent donors, to help us achieve sustainability faster.

Thank you and God bless.
