Summary

Pangolins are facing a crisis, but it is not too late to save them! This project is to ensure the survival of the Temminck's pangolin in South Africa, by providing the rescue, rehabilitation, release and monitoring that an individual pangolin must go through so they may be successfully released back into the wild. Be part of the movement committed to giving these amazing animals a second chance in life.

Challenge

Unique in appearance and seldom seen in the wild, yet pangolins have quickly become the most trafficked animal worldwide. Poached for their scales for use in traditional Asian Medicine which is believed to be a cure for various types of illnesses. Additionally, Pangolin meat is served as a delicacy in some restaurants. It is imperative that every life is saved to ensure the survival of this amazing and shy species before it is too late.

Solution

Coming together from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, the Scales Pangolin Rescue Fund is a collaboration of likeminded organisations and individuals working together to save pangolins from the illegal wildlife trade. Working with the experts, we provide for the rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and monitoring that an individual pangolin must go through so they may be successfully released back into the wild.

Long-Term Impact

Between 2020-2022 this project has saved the lives of 21 Temminck's Pangolins rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Only 6 months in to 2023 and we have already received 13 pangolins for rehabilitation. Without a qualified professional rehabilitation team to tend to their needs, pangolins retrieved from the trade would face certain death. The number of poaching incidents is growing rapidly, and this project ensures their safe return to wild.
