This project would help improve healthcare delivery for newborn babies and their mothers by equipping the Labor and maternity ward of the district Health Centre in the North Gonja district of the northern region of Ghana. The health centre serves a population of 43,000 but lacks essential facilities to deliver quality services to achieve goal of SDG 3. It will contribute to improving adoption of quality nutrition and hygiene practices among pregnant women and mothers in the target district.
The district Polyclinic in Daboya in the north Gonja district is the main referral hospital in the district serving the 43,000 district population. It receives annual average deliveries of 420 babies. However the Polyclinic lacks baby resuscitation machines and other equipment to support the prevention of neonatal deaths and to enhance mother and child care. Consequently, the lives of an average of 420 new born babies is at risk if an emergency occurs in the labour room.
The project would donate labor and maternity equipment for the labor room and maternity ward of the target district polyclinic. It will provide equipment for education on mother and baby care for pregnant women and mothers all in the north Gonja district of the northern region of Ghana. Labor Support equipment to be donated include 2 Baby Resuscitation/warmer machines, fridge to store Oxytocine medicine and educational Television set among others for education purposes.
It will contribute to reducing newborn mortality rate of 39 babies per 1000 Live births in the region. Risk of potential loss of lives of a proportion of 420 Newborn Babies will be prevented. The district hospital will record higher safe deliveries. 1000 pregnant women will be educated on newborn death prevention and care practices in the target district. It will help achieve target set under SDG3 by 2030 which is to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births.
