Hello Friends of the Golden Eagle!
Here an update of the project:
Results of the Third Expert Committee meeting
The Third Expert Committee meeting was held last month at the Bird Museum of Mexico located in Saltillo, Coahuila. The objective of the meeting was to review the progress of the project in the past 4 years, to define the next 2018-2022 action plan and to share knowledge and experience among experts. More than 30 experts participated representing the academic sector, NGOs, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.
During the meeting, experts announced great news: there is an increase on wild golden eagle populations in Mexico! In 2013 only 81 pairs were identified and today there are at least 137 pairs confirmed. Moreover, from the 145 nests registered in seven states in 2013, today there are 345 nests in ten states of the country!
Another exiting result of the meeting was that new civil society organizations will join efforts to conserve Mexico´s national symbol!
Monitoring 24/7 two families of golden eagles
Two cameras were installed in nests located in the state of Zacatecas at the end of April. Our colleagues from the U.S. Geological Service trained Mexican specialists in the installation process of the cameras. The new camera system was built in FMCN's offices with the coaching of HDonTap and AXIS Communications. So this time we will be monitoring a 4 week old chick and a 6 week old chick. Both chicks are expected to fly this month during their 10th week of age. All the collected information will be analyzed by professional scientists for better understanding of the species´ behavior including diet preferences and parental behavior.
Communication campaign
Stay tuned to Fondo´s Facebook page where we are currently transmitting daily short videos of the 4 week old chick! This communication campaign will help us to bring this initiative closer to the public and raise awareness about the vulnerability of the species in Mexico.
