Hello Friends of the Golden Eagle!
We have great news to report including the successful reintroduction of a prairie dog colony in the golden eagles´ habitat, educational workshops in rural communities and the rehabilitation of an injured juvenile.
First of all, 37 prairie dogs where reintroduced to Concepción Del Oro, Zacatecas at the end of 2016 with help of our partners. The reintroduction has been successful so far as the prairie dogs have adapted well to their new home. Prairie dogs are not only native prey species to the golden eagle and other raptors but most importantly, this species benefits the health of grasslands by allowing water infiltration into the groundwater and soil oxygenation which is essential for the health of the ecosystem.
Moreover, an educational workshop was held in Valle de Los Cirios, Baja California with more than 22 landowners who were trained in spotting nesting sites and in monitoring golden eagle movements. Also, three educational workshops for 44 children and teenagers were held in the state of Zacatecas to communicate the importance of preserving and rehabilitating grasslands.
Finally and most exciting, we started a small fund for rehabilitation of injured wild golden eagles. We did this because it is roughly estimated that between 15 to 20 individuals are injured per year by human-induced activities, an alarming number considering that there are only 120 pairs of golden eagles in the wild in Mexico. Just last December an intoxicated female was found in San Luis Potosi and thanks to the donations that covered its treatment, it will be soon reintroduced to its habitat.
