During the winter semester, teachers at Hewar began implementing a new programme in the classroom, using the methods of Project Based Learning and Inquiry Learning. As part of this programme, all school classes from grade 1 to 8 will work on two separate projects using the above methods each semester. The aim is for these methods to be utilised in a more systematic manner in the classroom
In the initial stages of the programme, teachers were assisted and supervised in their work by a pedagogic assistant, who taught them how to use these methods effectively and how to build up a project with the students. The first projects were carried out over a three-week period, during which students chose the subjects of inquiry or project, then planned and carried it out. At the end of the project, students concluded and presented their findings.
The first set of projects covered a wide range of subjects. For example, second graders investigated caterpillars and which type of food makes them grow the best, while eighth grade students did a practical research project about sorting different types of garbage. The children in first grade investigated how different plants grow in different conditions. All the projects and results were presented to parents and staff at the school at the end of the semester.
