Hewar Welcomes New Principal: Rania Karayanni

By Jenny Nyman | Project Leader

Rania Karayanni, Hewar's new principal
Rania Karayanni, Hewar's new principal

Rania, can you tell us a little about your background?

I am a school counsellor and English teacher, and i also have a certificate in school management. For the past 7 years I have worked as a counsellor in a school for children with conduct disorders and behavioural problems. In the past I have also worked as a consultant for the Association of Community Centres.

Why is Hewar important for you?

Hewar, for me, is a national project that simply has to be successful! There is no other option. I believe children should be happy at school, they should love learning, and I feel like Hewar is the only school in our community that truly offers such conditions for our children. This is the role of alternative education; constantly seeking new ways of making the learning process joyful and interesting.

What do you see as the main challenges in your new position as the principal of Hewar?

Because there are no official training programmes in alternative education methods for Arab teachers, I see the main challenge that needs to be tackled is in the school’s pedagogy. The teacher training will be intensified in the coming academic year and the school will also employ a new and experienced pedagogic advisor who will offer individualised support for each of the school’s teachers throughout the year. I believe this will help us uplift the learning process at Hewar.

What is your vision for Hewar in the coming years?

Hewar is an experimental school in our community, but I would like to see it become a model school that others strive to learn from. Because Hewar is about more than education; it’s about doing something important for our community, and it should be a place where all teachers want to work, because of the extra value and sense of satisfaction it can offer them.
