New Project Begins: Technology Thinking

By Jenny Nyman | Project Leader

At the beginning of this academic year, Hewar initiated a new cooperation with Al Nayzak; an organisation working to develop a new culture of scientific education aimed at providing economic opportunities and advancing the daily lives of Palestinians. The cooperation is supported by Welfare Association and consists of two projects; the ‘How to Think?’ programme for grades 3 and 4, which aims to promote the skills of logical and critical thinking inside the school environment, and the ‘Between Wires’ programme for grades 6 and 7, which deals with the relationship between technology and society.

The cooperation with Al Nayzak on these projects will continue over a period of two years and began this autumn with specialised training for the teachers at Hewar who will be in charge of carrying out the project activities. Part of this training took place during a 10-day stay in Estonia, where a group of 7 teachers learned about the ways technology can be used in the education process; inside the classroom and in terms of effective management and communication. Further training is carried out at the school by professionals from Al Nayzak, and the aim is that Hewar will be able to continue with the activities independently upon completing the two-year cooperation.

Furthermore, as part of this project Hewar has opened a new technology and computer lab on the top floor of the school building. Complete with 18 computer work stations as well as robotics kits and creative thinking games, the space was officially opened on November 10, 2015. The opening was attended by staff, board members and parents at Hewar, as well as representatives from Al Nayzak and Welfare Association. In addition, this project has allowed each classroom in the school to be equipped with a projector and each teacher has a laptop at their disposal in order to make a much wider range of tools available for Hewar’s educators.
