Project Report | Apr 28, 2025
Save the Eagles in Bangladesh

By Anisur Rahman | Project Coordinator

Progress Report: Save Eagles in Bangladesh
Reporting Period: January 2025 – April 2025
Organization: Green Fund Initiative (GFI), New York, USA
Local Partner in Bangladesh: Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation and Social Services Centre (BCSSC)

1. Overview

The "Save Eagles in Bangladesh" project continues to make significant progress in the conservation of eagle species and other raptors across the country. Despite the absence of funding during this reporting period, our team, in collaboration with BCSSC and local communities, successfully carried out critical rescue operations, community engagement activities, and conservation efforts to protect vulnerable bird species.

2. Key Achievements2.1 Rescue Operations

  • Rescue of Two Eaglets:
In partnership with BCSSC, we successfully rescued two vulnerable eaglets from Kendua upazila in the Netrakona district. These eaglets were found in a precarious condition and were promptly taken into our care for rehabilitation.

  • Rescue of Two Critically Endangered White-rumped Vultures (Gyps bengalensis):
During the same rescue operation, two critically endangered White-rumped Vultures were also saved. As vital contributors to ecosystem health, the rescue of these vultures aligns with our broader goal of protecting raptors and maintaining ecological balance.

2.2 Community Engagement

  • Local Community Participation:
Local residents played an essential role by identifying and reporting distressed birds, reflecting an encouraging increase in community awareness and support for conservation initiatives.

  • Awareness Campaigns:
Awareness sessions were conducted in Kendua upazila, emphasizing the importance of protecting eagle habitats and educating the community about the ecological significance of raptors.

2.3 Partnership Development

  • Strengthening Collaboration:
Our partnership with BCSSC remains a key pillar of our conservation success, enabling effective response actions and extending the impact of our initiatives at the grassroots level.

3. Challenges

  • Funding Constraints:
No external funding was received during this reporting period. All activities were carried out through voluntary efforts, in-kind support from local communities, and collaboration with BCSSC and the Bangladesh Forest Department. The lack of funding limited the expansion of monitoring and rehabilitation efforts.

  • Resource Limitations:
Limited resources continue to challenge our ability to expand rescue operations, conduct detailed habitat surveys, and launch wider-reaching awareness campaigns.

4. Next Steps

  • Continue monitoring the rescued eaglets and vultures to ensure their successful rehabilitation and eventual release into the wild.

  • Conduct habitat assessments in Kendua upazila and adjacent areas to identify and prioritize critical eagle and vulture habitats for protection.

  • Strengthen engagement with local communities and authorities to enhance reporting mechanisms and rapid response to wildlife emergencies.

  • Expand awareness campaigns to further educate residents about raptor conservation and sustainable environmental practices.

5. Conclusion

The progress achieved from January to April 2025 highlights the resilience and commitment of the Save Eagles in Bangladesh project team, even in the absence of dedicated funding. Our community-based conservation model, built on strong partnerships and local engagement, continues to drive positive change for eagles, vultures, and other critical raptor species. Sustained support and resource mobilization will be essential to expanding and strengthening our impact in the future.
