Project Report | Apr 19, 2026
Save the Eagles in Bangladesh

By Md. Anisur Rahman | Project Coordinator

1. Overview

During the reporting period of January–April 2026, the Save Eagles in Bangladesh project continued to face significant funding limitations, which restricted the implementation of planned large-scale activities such as systematic monitoring, rehabilitation services, and regular rescue operations.

Despite these financial constraints, GFI and BCSSC remained engaged at the community level, prioritizing awareness-raising, local engagement, and maintaining volunteer networks to support the protection of eagles and other raptors in the project area.

2. Key Achievements 2.1 Awareness and Community Engagement

Due to limited funding, the project focused on low-cost but impactful outreach activities:

  • 3 awareness-raising programs were conducted in the project area
  • Participants included local residents, fish farmers, and youth

The programs emphasized:

  • The ecological importance of eagles and other raptors
  • The risks associated with trapping and capturing birds
  • Safe fishing practices to prevent accidental harm
  • Community responsibility in protecting wildlife

These activities helped sustain community awareness and encouraged positive attitudes toward eagle conservation.

2.2 Community Interaction and Local Support

  • Continued informal engagement with community members during field visits
  • Increased willingness among local people to discuss wildlife issues
  • Strengthened relationships with local stakeholders, particularly in fish-farming areas

2.3 Partnership and Coordination

  • Ongoing coordination with BCSSC to implement community-based, low-cost interventions
  • Continued communication with local volunteers to maintain readiness for future rescue or response activities

3. Challenges

  • Insufficient funding to run the project smoothly and expand activities
  • Inability to conduct:
    • Regular field monitoring
    • Structured rescue and rehabilitation services
    • Large-scale awareness campaigns
  • Continued risks to eagles from fishing nets and human activities
  • Limited logistical resources and emergency response capacity

4. Next Steps

Subject to funding availability, the project aims to:

  • Expand awareness programs in high-risk areas, especially among fish farmers
  • Strengthen community-based reporting and rapid response mechanisms
  • Develop partnerships with local authorities for coordinated conservation action
  • Secure funding for structured rescue, rehabilitation, and monitoring initiatives

5. Conclusion

The January–April 2026 period highlights the continued commitment of the Save Eagles in Bangladesh initiative despite ongoing financial constraints. Through three awareness-raising programs and continuous community engagement, the project maintained local awareness and support for eagle conservation.

These efforts demonstrate the resilience of the initiative and the importance of community-based approaches. However, sustained and adequate funding is essential to scale up interventions and ensure long-term protection of eagles and other raptors in Bangladesh.
