Your gift saved Sultana from child marriage!

By Elizabeth Griffin | Senior Writer

You saved Sultana from early marriage!
You saved Sultana from early marriage!

Your gift provided a scholarship for a 13-year-old girl in Bangladesh to attend school! Because of that, she was saved from becoming a child bride. Thank you!

The youngest of nine children, Sultana's father passed away when she was a baby. This left her family without income and her mother was desperate to take care of her children. As the years went on, six of Sultana’s siblings were married and left home. Because her mother was worried about her daughter’s safety if she became ill and died, she planned a marriage for Sultana. She had no idea that getting married at age 13 would put her daughter at risk for serious health issues and keep her in a cycle of poverty.

Through you, Sultana was given a scholarship to attend school and her mother learned about the dangers of early marriage. An education will give Sultana a good future where she can take care of herself and not live in poverty. Seeing this, her mother realized Sultana did not need to get married to be taken care of and that it wouldn’t be good for her, so she called off the marriage.

Girls who stay in school are six times less likely to be married off before their 18th birthday.

Sultana’s brothers who still live at home promised to look after Sultana and support her education. Sultana is very grateful for the scholarship you have given her, and that her family now understands the facts about early marriage. She hopes to become a police officer after completing her education and work on women’s rights and early marriage issues.

Thank you for giving 13-year-old Sultana a bright future!
