You saved Shefali from child marriage!

By Elizabeth Griffin | Senior Writer

Thank you for rescuing Shefali from child marriage
Thank you for rescuing Shefali from child marriage

Your gift provided a scholarship for Shefali in Bangladesh. Because of that, she was saved from becoming a child bride and was able to pursue her dreams of an education. Thank you!

When Shefali’s father wanted her to stop going to school and get married, the 15-year-old cried and cried. She loved learning, and she didn’t want to get married and leave her family.

Not only did Shefali want to become educated, she knew from her friends that getting married so young had horrible results. Child marriage leads to pregnancy and childbirth, which pose serious risks to a girl’s health. It isolates her from her friends and family, which leads to loneliness.

Besides, marriage to an older man Shefali didn’t know was frightening. What if he was abusive?

Child marriage keeps girls in poor communities in a cycle of poverty because they have no opportunities to go to school or work. They are dependent on their husband, and because he is much older than they are, they are often left as widows with no source of income.

Fortunately, Shefali’s mother didn’t want her to get married either. She heard about scholarships through World Concern. And thanks to your gift, Shefali was given one. She was so relieved and happy to be able to stay in school.

Through you, Shefali was given a scholarship. An education will give her a good future where she can take care of herself and not live in poverty. Girls who stay in school are six times less likely to be married off before their 18th birthday.

Shefali plans to pursue higher education and become a lawyer to help her community. Your gift is making an impact that will last for generations to come.

Thank you for giving Shefali a bright future!
