Hussain is a nineteen year old young man from Afganistan. He was one of the first three refugees to enrol at TLF. He came to Indonesia as a refugee almost three years ago. He has a mother, one brother and one sister that remain in his homeland. His father was killed by the Taliban four years ago. He was a merchant going back and forth to Kabul, having to pass through Taliban controlled areas.
When he was sixteen years old, he was at a restaurant when he was asked to carry a parcel. At that instant he knew it was a bomb. He made an escape by running out through the toilet. His mother told him that he needed to leave home immediately otherwise the Taliban would kill him. She gave him USD 6,000, the family’s life savings.
Without knowing where to go or what to do, young Hussain hitched a ride to Kabul. There he met a taxi driver and told him his story. The driver said that he could help him to leave the country. Hussain gave him the entire money he had for him to arrange his journey. From there he got a flight to India and stayed there for two weeks. His journey continued to Malaysia for another week or so. Then from Malaysia he was smuggled to Medan, Indonesia by boat and finally made his way to Jakarta via an illegal flight.
Hussain had to camp for one month by the parking lot of the UNHCR office before they found accommodation for him. He moved from place to place until finally he was accommodated with Yayasan Budha Tzu Chi.
For almost three years while he was being processed by UNHCR, Hussain heard about the opportunity to learn at TLF. He was in the process of finalizing his resettlement to Australia. He thought it will be a useful skill knowing about organic farming to start a new life there.
During his one hundred days program, Hussain showed dedication and enthusiasm in every activity. He learned about discipline, money management, computer literacy, English, communication, create a CV and learned how to be successful in an interview. He hopes all these skills will be beneficial to his future.
He believes many other youth like him will benefit from the program. “Before I came to TLF, I had no idea what to answer when I was asked what do you want to be? Now I know exactly what I want. Thank you TLF for taking refugees into the program. We are treated equally here and I feel like I am not alone even though my family is far away”, said Hussain.
