Save 50 Youth with Regenerative Agriculture

Every day is a learning dar at The learning Farm. We instill them with various skills so they can choose in which path they are suitable with. The skills are entrepreneurship, self management, personal hygiene, leadership, book-keeping, financial management, etc.

Francelis Harefa, 18 years male from Nias, North Sumatra, is one of 36 students from Basic Program. He has significant change of his behavior during his participation in TLF program. "I used to be a spoil son and misused my parents trust. My parents thought I go to school but in fact I went having fun doing illegal racing, drink alcohol, and luring with girls in night clubs. It made me dropped out of school. During 2 months learning here [The Learning Farm], I have learned a lot of things and I realised how stupid I was. I want to be different and fix my future. I hope my application for the Advanced Program can be accepted."

The Learning Farm is excited to welcome our new family members from Batch 17 into our program. Thirty nine vulnerable youth have been selected and started their learning on August 26, with a finish date of November 27. Students in this group have come to us from Nias, Jambi, South Sumatra, Banten, West Java, Jakarta, and other areas in Indonesia.

During their first week at TLF, they were introduced to our program, as well as the farm, dormitory and general neighbourhood. Our code of conduct was outlined and, after some group discussion, the students set their own rules. 

Our staff delivered a Personal Hygiene module that was provided by Unilever. Mas Iwan Pramana also visited to lead the students through the first 3 habits from the 7 Habits of Effective People module. Students completed pre-tests in organic farming and English, a computer skills self-assessment checklist, and an observation task that demonstrated the difference between conventional and organic farming practice. To provide better insight into the individual needs of each student, the house mentors assisted the students in the completion of a mental health risk screening process.  The students were also introduced to expectations relating to their Journals which will be used as one of our assessment tools.

It was a great first week of student engagement and there are lots and lots of knowledge building and skill development activities planned for them. Happy learning, Batch 17!
