 We at SANKALP constantly Endeavour to improve our services/facilities to Enable the Disabled; Translate Disability into Ability; Capability & a winning Opportunity. Moving further in this direction From 12^th February as earlier informed for improving nutritional deficiencies we have started providing Diet as well as vitamin supplements to the children based on the advice of dietician and pediatrician in addition to the free meals being provided to children at SANKALP.

Children at SANKALP had a fabulous valentine day on 14^th Feb. when “Baroda Metropolitan Jaycee” junior wing members decided to celebrate it with them. They played and danced for two hours and thereafter had pizza lunch together. In the evening some children participated in a dance competition organized by another school.

As a part of SANKALP’s curriculum of collaborating with other organizations as well as with the public through various events/awareness programs and also to provide an opportunity to the developmentally disabled children of Vadodara to showcase their talents, an“INTER SCHOOL DRAWING COMPETITION FOR DIFFERENTLY ABLED CHILDREN”was organized by them on Thursday, 10^th April, 2014. Due to limitation of space and funding, the contest was restricted to first 100 entries. However, 105 children from 11 different schools including children from SANKALP participated in the event. Competition was divided in two groups of children. One group was for children below the physical age of 15 years and the second group was for children above 15 years of physical age. Children below 15 years were given pre- sketched drawing for coloring while children above 15 years had to draw & color their drawing. The competition was judged by three eminent & qualified experts. Four prizes were given to top four selected drawings in each group. All the participants were given a certificate as well as a small gift, a chocolate by SANKALP. Snacks were also served to all participating children.

As scheduled, a one to one report reading cum parent counseling session was held on 21^st April, 2014. It began with report reading of the progress made by each child to the parents followed by advice on diet guidance for the child.  This was supported by advice from Physiotherapist, on her subject. Parents were also given guidance for corrective/follow up actions to be taken at home. The diet and vitamin supplement is expected to go a long way in improving physical health of the underprivileged children who are suffering from malnutrition and whose parents cannot otherwise afford these. This was followed by Feedback collection from parents in the form of their observations to review the efficacy of training & rehabilitation plan for each child.

Though improvement has been observed in most of the children in varying degree at SANKALP, in this report we would again like to highlight the yearly progress of a six and half year girl named Hemali. Her family is from very low income group, father is a mason & mother is housewife & she also has an elder sister. When Hemali came to SANKALP, she was 6 years old and was unable to speak or participate in any social activities.

10 months later, after attending training & rehabilitation plan specifically prepared for her by a team of Clinical Psychologist, Speech and behavior therapist, special educators and executed under their supervision, she has achieved 65% improvement in functional skills, 94% in Communication skills and 70% improvement in language development against the targets fixed for her during the current session. Her performance has been validated by her mother also.

However, Hemali and children like her require regular training & rehabilitation plan with proper diet/supplements. Thanks to the facilities being provided at SANKALP, her condition is improving and she as well as her family is also very happy.

We need to keep "SANKALP" running so that Hemali and many more Disabled like her can get a fighting chance at life. We can do this with YOUR support.  We at SANKALP are engaged in doing our best to Enable the Disabled; Translate Disability into Ability; Capability & a winning Opportunity. This was demonstrated by two of our children Navdeep and Khatija who won prizes in the sport event organized by Balbhawan society on 6^th December. Navdeep won 1^st prize in running & 2^nd prize in long jump and Khatija won 1^st prize in running. Navdeep again won first prize in running and 2^nd prize in “Aiming the pyramid” in another sports event organized by Friends society on 5^th Jan. This is very encouraging for entire SANKALP team.

As scheduled, the parent counseling was done on 8^th December, 2013. It began with a general advice to all the parents on how to handle their children at home. During the general counseling session they were informed about the methodology being followed by SANKALP and various do’s & don’ts with respect to the activities of daily living, discipline, engagement at home, socialization, parents’ behavior and medical attention were explained to them. This was supported by advice from Physiotherapist and Speech therapist on their respective subject followed by an interactive question answer session for the specific queries from parent. Feedback was also collected from all parents present in the session to review the efficacy of the training & rehabilitation plan for each child.

Christmas was celebrated at the centre on 24^th December and a Christmas tree was made by the teachers & children of the centre followed by a party after which they all received a gift. A local shopping mall invited children to celebrate Christmas day at their mall. During this visit children enjoyed cutting and eating Christmas cake. All children were also given gifts by the Santa Clause present at the mall. They played for about an hour at the gaming zone of mall which was followed by a treat of burger by McDonalds. All children greatly enjoyed the festival.

All the children had an outing on 4^th Feb to the Zoo. They also had a toy train ride followed by lunch.

We are happy to inform that with the support of our kind donors yet another initiative has been taken by SANKALP & we have moved a step forward towards our goal of providing quality services through a scientific approach. We have now on board a professionally qualified dietician for giving recommendations on the nutritional needs of children based on their disability/physical & socio economic condition.

From 12^th February the recommended dietary modifications have already been implemented in the free meals being provided to the children at SANKALP. They are also being given necessary dietary and medicinal supplements daily for improving nutritional deficiencies. During next counseling session parents will be given guidance for corrective/follow up actions to be taken at home. It will go a long way in improving physical health of many underprivileged children who are suffering from malnutrition and cannot otherwise afford these supplements/vitamins.

Though improvement has been observed in most of the children in varying degree at SANKALP, in this report we would like to tell you about the progress of a six and half year girl named Hemali. She suffers from mental retardation with speech impairment.

Her Individual Education Plan at SANKALP covers Special Education, Functional Skills, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

As per the observations of the team of SANKALP’s experts, Hemali has shown considerable improvement in special education as well as in speech. Her concentration span has improved and she has started taking interest in all activities also. We are confident that sustained training & rehabilitation under the guidance of professionally trained experts of SANKALP will definitely bring further improvement in her condition in the days to come. This improvement is also noted by her parents.
