Dear Joy for Children Friends,
Joy for Children Uganda recently conducted a menstrual hygiene education and sanitary pad distribution activity at Kyambogo Primary School, reaching over 200 boys and girls from Primary Four to Primary Six.
Through interactive sessions, learners explored menstruation, puberty, personal hygiene and the importance of creating a supportive environment for girls. Including boys helped promote understanding, challenge menstrual stigma and encourage respectful attitudes towards menstruation. A separate girls-only session provided space for girls to discuss their specific needs and concerns.
One important observation came from Madam Margaret, a teacher at the school, who shared that some girls resort to using toilet tissue during menstruation because their families cannot afford sanitary pads. This brought to light the financial challenges affecting girls' menstrual hygiene. Although Joy for Children Uganda distributed Softcare sanitary pads, the available supplies were insufficient to reach all the girls who needed them.
What's Next?
To promote more sustainable menstrual health solutions, Joy for Children Uganda is exploring the establishment of reusable sanitary pad-making and training initiatives. Through these initiatives, girls will acquire practical skills to make, use and maintain reusable pads, helping reduce the recurring cost of menstrual products. We also look forward to expanding menstrual health education and strengthening school-based support for girls.
Every girl deserves to manage her period safely, confidently and with dignity.
Thank you for the continued support.
The attached activity report and photographs provide further details of the engagement and learners' experiences.
