Healthy homes promote good physical and mental health and good health can depend on having homes free and safe from physical hazards. Poor quality and inadequate housing contribute to health problems such as chronic diseases and injuries and it can have harmful effects on childhood development. Substandard housing such as water leaks, poor ventilation, mud floors and pest infestation due to lack of doors and windows can lead to an increase in mold, mites and other allergens associated with poor health.

A simple safe habitant can change everything for a family i.e. they are safe, healthy and hopeful for the future but some families with few financial resources are most likely to experience unhealthy housing and typically least able to remedy them, contributing to disparities in health across. Last year Another Hope Children’s Ministries under the safe habitant project supported the family of a grandmother and her seven grandchildren with refurbishing her house and the family lives in a better shelter, feeling more safe and secure. The project was concluded and the family is living happily in their house.

Living in a fully constructed house is a dream come true. Since his childhood, together with siblings and their grandmother lived in a house which was not fully constructed missing some doors and windows, halls in walls and a leaking roof. It was tough to live in such a house because it exposed them to risks like acquiring asthma and pneumonia due to the cold since the windows never had glasses and some parts were not fixed. They house used to harbor mosquitos which exposed them to malaria and rats used to enter in the house which was unpleasant. He says they had lost unity with some of their family members like uncles because they were tired of us asking them to help us refurbish our house.

It was always a dream to live in a fully constructed house but we bless the lord for Another Hope Children’s Ministries and other partners for making this happen. Even when we dreamt of living in a better house, we never had any idea it will be this beautiful. We no longer have problems like too much coldness, mosquitos, rats coming into the house, the leaking roof and our family is united again. We are happier and feel safe and secure and all this happened through the safe habitant project. On behalf of my family and our grandmother, I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in the process of making our house a better place to live. We pray abundant blessings for you.

A number of Ugandans live below the poverty line and this is one of the factors that has put rise to the housing need in Uganda. Many people live in substandard houses and this has compromised people’s health and development opportunities. Some houses are risky places to stay because of their condition like the cracked walls, linking roofs, lacking doors and windows.

Early this year, Another Hope Children’s Ministries (AHCM) started on the safe habitat for grandma and her children project which aimed at improving the house the grandma and her grandchildren. A number of factors triggered the refurbishing of the house for this family and among these were: - the leaking roof, the dusty floor, holes in the walls of the house and cracked walls. These made the house unsafe for living and it had put the lives of the family at risk. Through this project which started in January 2019, the refurbishing of the house started to make the house a better place to live. The house floor, the walls, painting, fixtures, and fittings are the areas which were worked on and the house now is a better place to live. The project was concluded in September 2019.

The beneficiaries are so happy for the work that was done and the grandmother narrates.

‘’I am so happy for the work towards improving my house and the life of my grandchildren in the long run. The holes on the walls that made the house so cold during the night and harbored bedbugs are no longer in place because the walls were repaired and painted. My grandchildren and I feel much more secure now that the doors and windows were fixed on the house. Now we can have better sleep during the night without worrying.’’

The elder grandchild, aged 13 and a pupil at St Mary’s pride way in primary three expressed this gratitude towards AHCM. He appreciated the new look given to the house and mostly the paint that was used. He further commented that the house looks beautiful and safer than before.

AHCM conveys appreciation to the partners who contributed towards this project to see that the dream for this grandma of having a better house comes true. Thank you so much and may the good Lord bless you.

Safe House for grandma July 2019

Grandmothers are primarily responsible for taking care of their grandchildren in most Ugandan settings, this has happened as a result of loss of paternal or maternal parents or the fact that the actual parents cannot afford to care for them either as a result of negligence or even teen parenting which is the most common in this case. For Ugandan grandparents, the best gift you can give to them and the grandchildren is a roof over their heads. The Ugandan government has a program under social security that provides for the elderly (the social assistance grant for empowerment) but this help comes in when the beneficiary is 65 years and above leaving the rest without the help. It also happens that the help is in some regions others haven’t been given the grants. Another Hope Children’s Ministries embarked on the journey to give a gift of a safe habitat through refurbishing the house of a grand mum who lives with seven grandchildren. This project commenced in January 2019 and the inside part of the house was refurbished only missing the inside door and the front part was partly worked on. From the time the house was refurbished in the inside part, the family now have better sleep since they got more sleeping space, the holes in the walls were all filled, all windows and glasses were fixed and the doors. They no longer have a problem of mosquitoes since the holes in the walls were filled and the house had very many bed bugs making it hard for them to have a good sleep.

We are happy that what has been done has positively impacted the house and we are planning to have the last phase of the refurbishing processes done by the end of August. The house will be plastered, fix the inside doors separating rooms and painting it. This is going to cost USD 544 and we are glad to say that we have got these funds already from a couple in the USA
