Summary

The Rural Maternity Ward Improvement Project aims to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare services by upgrading infrastructure, equipment, and essential resources at a rural health facility. Many pregnant women in rural communities face challenges accessing safe, quality maternity care due to inadequate facilities, shortages of medical equipment, and limited capacity to manage obstetric emergencies. These challenges contribute to preventable maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Challenge

The project will renovate and equip the maternity ward to provide a safe, clean, and dignified environment for mothers and newborns. Key interventions include the procurement of delivery beds, neonatal resuscitation equipment, maternal monitoring devices, infection prevention supplies, reliable water and sanitation facilities, and essential furniture.

Solution

By improving the quality and accessibility of maternity services, the project seeks to increase skilled birth attendance, reduce maternal and neonatal complications, and enhance overall health outcomes for women and children in the target community. The initiative will directly benefit pregnant women, newborns, healthcare workers, and the wider community by ensuring safer pregnancies, deliveries, and postnatal care.

Long-Term Impact

WICO already established a 30 bed waiting mothers shelter which has improved the situation in the district by providing a waiting shelter for mothers who travel long distances to the health facility. This combined with better delivery facilities will reduce the risks of mothers and babies and give dignity to the natural duty every mother has.
