Tiba Africa Support (TAS) is a sub-group of TBF-UK set up in 2011, that offers support to Tiba Africa Foundation (Tiba) Tiba is a TBr project in the Kabiria and Kibera slum districts of Nairobi, a registered NGO charity. See our TBF-UK website for more information.

In 2013 Tiba became the official charity of TBF-UK. Tiba has three projects: Abundance School, Joy Babycare and Give Me Another Chance. It offers TBr as a core resource and also runs workshops and seminars. Its CEO is Daniel Marungu who is a TBr Senior Trainer. It is independent from Breathe Africa, a commercial business of Vincent Odhiambo Oloo that also does some charitable work.

Global Giving. Tiba has its projects on the on-line charitable giving website Global Giving (GG). Regular reports and updates are posted on www.globalgiving.org. GG offers fundraising advice, crowdfunding appeals and grants and ensures its charities operate within international due diligence guidelines. GG inspected Tiba last summer.

Fundraising via GG direct to Tiba has so far netted:

Abundance School: £7887 over 2 years from 41 donors

Joy Babycare £3,000 over 3 years from 99 donors

Give Me Another Chance £5,102 over 2 years from 23 donors

Global Giving donations are currently in pounds or dollars; soon they anticipate adding Euros, which will help Tiba.

As a condition of a successful Christmas campaign, Tiba was eligible in December to apply for a £15,000 grant from GG towards a new school building for Abundance. They stand a good chance (74 grants/160 applications) and decisions will be announced at the end of March.

TAS support to Tiba

During the year we have continued to offer advice and support via skype and edit reports etc.

Julian Falk has drawn scale drawing of their proposed new school building and given some advice.

Julie Ann has given a presentation about Tiba’s work to the Global Inspiration Conference in Cape Town and the Senior Trainers meeting in Italy and has prepared social media pics for campaigns.

Our members and other TBF-UK members have continued to fundraise for Tiba at workshops etc, especially Morag.

We have supported Tiba’s on-line fundraising campaigns during the year. Mostly recently, we supported their Christmas Campaign for school supplies for each child, which raised £906 via Global Giving and £730 via a local politician in Nairobi.

Andria attended a recent GG training session and AGM in London.

We pay for their accounts to be audited by the Kenyan NGO Board,

We are also supporting Tiba in beginning to apply to trusts for their Give Me Another Chance project and looking to support their Abundance school campaign via grants.

Finance. See separate finance report. We have had problems with our bankers, the Co-op this year, after banking with them for 6 years, which has been a burden to our Treasurer Sue Geary: a reflection of their ineptitude and need to comply with banking regulations, we think. Thanks to all the Officers of TBF-UK for agreeing to submit your bank details. We continue to only use this account as a ‘back stop’ for small donations where it isn’t appropriate to use GG.

Please support our Facebook campaigns for Tiba by sharing and liking. This is the best way to get new donors. This is going to be especially important as we support Tiba’s campaign for a new school

News from Daniel in Nairobi.

Kevin (fundraiser) has moved to the U.S. and never met his obligations with Tiba, prompting the termination of his contract for the time being. If he agrees to work again for Tiba, his duties will be redefined and he will be assigned someone to supervise his duties.

The Joy Baby Care project has continued to serve our community. A third cohort of people are beginning to work with the Give Me Another Chance project. Abundance School is doing well. It is benefitting from Lillian’s teacher training materials. (see reports on GG).

Daniel is grateful for the support he receives both locally and internationally.

He can’t imagine where Tiba would be had it not been for the continued support. of Tiba Africa Support.

We are thinking of what we need to do to attract corporate / organization donors(locally and abroad) .

Here are a few targets we have for the coming months

to improve our website
to draft a proper and detailed proposal on school construction and supply it to school construction funding agencies( as many as possible). Tiba is planning for a strategic planning meeting prior to its AGM (in May) ; to plan for the school construction campaign.

Christmas Message from Daniel Marungu, Chief Executive Officer

Abundance school has continued to be an icon of education in our community for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to go to school.

We have a total of 80 children regularly attending, four regular teachers and several volunteer teachers, a cook, gardener and security guard.

The school is in a wooden shack with few facilities – not even a proper toilet. It has just one small classroom that is partitioned into five learning spaces.

As well as Maths, English , Swahili, Social Studies and Religious Education, the children are also taught General Studies where cleanliness and safety are taught to protect them from dangers of contaminated water and poor hygiene etc.

Our children also benefit from relaxing breathing techniques, body movement, music and other stress-relief related studies.

We want to create a society that is holistically developed where each individual values themself and other people

To encourage families to send their children to school, we are promising them a back to school pack which will include school bag, books,pencils,coloring pens, sharpener etc.

We are launching a campaign via Global Giving to raise funds for these Christmas gifts.

The progress at Joy Babycare is impressive.We have an average of seven children under our care on a daily basis. So far activities are smoothly conducted. We look into activation and stimulation of brain growth and development of a child.

We are introducing a program where all parents come together to spend time with their children at Joy Babycare so they can benefit from new relationships and parenting.

Give Me Another Chance is a project that poses great challenges to us. We have not been able to increase the number of breath ambassadors due to limited funds.We are hoping that maybe we will be able to find a corporate donor to fund this program

Even though we have not been able to grow, some of those people we trained have continued to inspire others in community. They have continued to give talks in schools ,churches and other social gatherings.

The future

We have a chance to receive a grant of 5000-20,000 UK pounds from Global Giving UK. We have been invited to actively participate in their Christmas campaign to raise our chances to qualify. We have decided to use our ‘Back to School pack’ campaign to raise our chances of winning. We are now needing to reach out to as many friends as possible for support.As I speak , I am excited to draft a budget for our Abundance School construction project. We are trusting in God to attract what we need.

A moment of fun with day care babies

Time has gone very quickly with our projects since we last posted a report. We have continued to grow in strength and numbers of people we are working with and supporting.

Teachers together with the children at Abundance School are working extra hard to cover all topics expected of them. The term has been shortened by the Ministry of Education.The Christmas holiday is going to be longer than before. We hope to use this time to teach and engage the children through extra-curricular activities: thus dancing, singing , drawing, painting, games and sports. This will give children the chance to identify and nurture their talents.

Our breath ambassadors are having fewer activities in schools due to government regulations to curb social activities during this term. Instead , they are focusing on the community and hope that funds can be available to recruit and train more ambassadors. Our young single mothers are satisfied with the Joy day care project.They have continued to perfect their parenting skills through the empowerment programs offered at our Joy baby care project. They find it peaceful and easier to work while their children are cared for.

We have some lovely family news too from key people in our organization. Rajab our chairman and his wife Hamida are expecting a baby any time now. Teacher Fred’s wife Doricas has just given birth to their first child Alvin after 10 years of marriage. We are very happy for them

Our big professional news is that we are lucky to have Kevin Boylen joining our team.

He is going to be in charge of communication, on-line pitching, presence and fundraising. Kevin joining the team will free me up to do more hands-on work with our projects and run more courses and groups in our community.

Personal Introduction to Supporters of The Tiba Africa Foundation

"My name is Kevin Patrick Boylen .I have been involved in social and economic development projects in East Africa for the past sixteen years. My experience is primarily in the fields of public health and education, with particular focus on health promotion for children and young adults. Prior to this, I worked in medical research as a molecular biologist and study coordinator for investigations involving human subjects. Throughout all these endeavors I have found a strong background in ICT to be a tremendous asset, and have worked continuously to develop my ICT skills, particularly those related to database management, statistical analysis, and web and mobile design and development.

I was introduced to the work of the Tiba Africa Foundation by Daniel Marungu in early 2016. He invited me to visit the site of one of their projects, the Abundance School in Nairobi, Kenya. I was impressed by the high level of organization and by the enthusiasm of both the students and instructors. I was also struck by the clear need for additional resource to meet the demands and expectations of the Abundance School stakeholders. On this basis, I responded enthusiastically when Dan invited me to become directly involved in supporting the Abundance School. I look forward to bringing my skills and experience into the effort to meet the goals and potential of the Abundance School and the TIba Africa Foundation.
