Rise and Thrive Project Updates, July 2026

By Masudio Dorcus | Volunteer Program Coordinator

The Rise and Thrive Project is proving very effective in its mandate to support and uplift young women and girls through the Poultry Enterprise Initiative as a livelihood intervention. The project aims to build practical poultry farming skills, strengthen economic resilience, and create sustainable household income for the beneficiaries.

On 4 April 2025, Amani Transformational Foundation through its Rise and Thrive project donated 21 Kenbro chicks to economically challenged young women and girls. The group managed the birds with technical guidance from ATF, focusing on feeding, hygiene, and health monitoring.

Key Activities Implemented

• Daily management of poultry including feeding, cleaning, and health monitoring.

• Group coordination for collective care and decision-making.

• Sale of mature birds to generate income.

• Assessment and planning for poultry house renovation.

Key Achievements

• Successfully raised 11 birds to market size despite a disease outbreak that claimed 10 chicks.

• Generated UGX 165,000 from the sale of 11 chickens at UGX 15,000 each.

• Beneficiaries demonstrated commitment and acquired practical poultry management skills.

• Identified critical infrastructure needs and prioritized poultry house renovation for long-term sustainability.

Challenges

• Disease outbreak and limited access to veterinary services and quality feed.

• High production costs leading to early sale of birds before egg production.

• Urgent need for poultry house renovation, which consumed most of the sales proceeds and limited funds for restocking.

Way Forward

The beneficiaries remain fully committed to the poultry enterprise. Having prioritized the renovation of the poultry house, they now require additional financial and technical support for restocking chicks, feed, vaccines, and other essential inputs to fuel and sustain the project.
