Challenge

Natural resources degradation in the micro-watersheds of these two communities in the municipality of Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico, threatens their territories and the lives of their families. Causing, among other things, by deforestation, forest fires, and open-air defecation, which contaminate the water. Batopilas has the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) in the state of Chihuahua and is the municipality with the lowest HDI and Health Index in Mexico, making it a priority area for attention

Solution

The implementation of this project contributes to the environmental restoration and conservation initiative that has been ongoing since 2019. Through reforestation, soil erosion is reduced, moisture levels increase, and springs recharge, promoting biodiversity and mitigating climate change. Additionally, the construction of communal dry toilets helps decrease air and water pollution and reduces gastrointestinal and skin diseases, which have a negative impact on people's health and productivity.

Long-Term Impact

Our approach strengthens the environmental and traditional knowledge of the communities while also developing new skills. it promotes the participation of women and male leaders, especially youth, who, alongside traditional authorities, animate and drive the continuity of the work. the communities contribute at least 10% of the project cost in kind. The sustainability and impact of the project are based on the participation and leadership of the communities in their territorial restoration plan.
