Weaving Our Roots was held in an Afro-Mexican community located in the Costa region of Oaxaca, Mexico, as part of a collective process of community strengthening, identity, and rights.
Through various artistic and participatory workshops—such as printmaking, stamping, and storytelling—more than 58 girls in the community learned about and reflected on their rights, particularly their right to Afro-Mexican cultural identity.
These spaces allowed them to recognize and value their roots, strengthening their sense of belonging and the community fabric. Likewise, workshops on dignity and menstrual health were held, where information was shared about alternatives for menstrual management, such as the use of menstrual cups and eco-friendly cloth pads, promoting body care, autonomy, and respect for the
In parallel, a course on making handcrafted hammocks was conducted with the mothers of the participating girls, with the aim of strengthening processes of economic autonomy in their families. This practice represents an alternative for generating income and can contribute to supporting the education of the girls. In turn, strengthening economic autonomy can be a key factor in preventing various forms of violence, including sexual violence.
This festival was made possible thanks to your support. Your trust makes it possible for these community processes to continue growing and strengthening the rights of girls and women in the region.
We remain committed to building safe, dignified, and culturally meaningful spaces, and we extend an invitation to continue joining this collective effort. Your support is essential to continue accompanying more girls and families in the full exercise of their rights and the strengthening of their communities.
