Dear friends and supporters,
We are pleased to share an update on the compact settlement (temporary shelter) project for internally displaced persons in Shevchenkove village.
What has been accomplished
Thanks to the support of GlobalGiving's individual donors, furniture, household appliances, kitchen equipment, children's furniture, a play area, and other essential items have been purchased for the compact settlement in Shevchenkove village, ensuring comfortable and dignified living conditions for internally displaced persons.
With this support, the facility is now fully furnished and ready to receive residents. Renovation work has also been completed, and the premises are equipped with a lift and accessible restrooms for people with disabilities and wheelchair users. This will ensure barrier-free access and comfortable living conditions for people with different needs.
Remaining step before opening
At the same time, as the renovation work was being completed, updated legislative requirements came into effect, under which compact settlements must be equipped with a fire alarm system. This requirement became the final step before the facility's opening. The local self-government body spent considerable time searching for additional resources and partners to fund this work. The necessary funding has now been secured, installation of the system is in its final stage, and it is planned to be completed and put into operation in early September. Immediately afterward, the community will be able to begin housing internally displaced persons.
Why this matters now
The opening of this compact settlement is especially important at this time. Due to the significant deterioration of the security situation in southern Ukraine and intensified shelling in Mykolaiv and the neighboring Kherson regions, more and more people are being forced to leave their homes and evacuate. At the same time, there remains a shortage of safe, accessible, and well-equipped temporary housing in the region.
Looking ahead
The combination of support from GlobalGiving donors, who financed the purchase of the necessary equipment and furniture, and the contribution of the local self-government body, which completed the renovation and is ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, will soon make it possible to open a modern, safe, and inclusive compact settlement for people who need support the most.
Thank you for making this possible. Your support is helping create a safe and dignified place for displaced families in Shevchenkove.
With gratitude,
Legal Development Network team
