This project will facilitate the renovation of The Ark Foundation Domestic Violence Shelter, which serves as a safe space for abused women and children. This project will create a conducive environment for survivors and increase the number of survivors admitted into the shelter which is the only operational shelter for abused women and children in Ghana.
1 in 3 women in Ghana faces domestic violence. Despite the increasing number of abuse cases, shelters are almost non-existent in the country. This challenge hinders many survivors particularly women from leaving abusive homes or relationships as they have no safe place to move to.
The Ark's Shelter is the only operational shelter for survivors of Domestic Violence in Ghana. The facility since its establishment in 1999 has not undergone a major renovation. The facility needs reinforcement and expansion to be able to accommodate more residents and also create a conducive environment. This project will facilitate the renovation and expansion of the facility fitted with inner washrooms to prevent residents from going outside, especially at night and on rainy days.
The project will ensure more women and children going through abuse have access to shelter services and other services such as counseling, child care, medical care, etc.
