Summary

Groupe Scolaire Busogo I, Saint Benoit is a Catholic day school in Busogo Sector, Musanze District, Rwanda, serving 2,358 students, including 1,163 girls. Many families live in poverty, and many girls lack sanitary materials during menstruation, causing frequent absences and affecting their studies. The school plans to renovate and equip a Girls' Day Support Room where girls can rest, manage menstrual hygiene, receive counseling, and access emergency materials. This project will improve hygiene.

Challenge

Many girls at Groupe Scolaire Busogo I come from low-income families and lack access to sanitary materials and a private space to manage menstrual hygiene during school hours. As a result, many girls miss classes during menstruation due to discomfort, fear of embarrassment, and lack of support. This leads to frequent absenteeism, reduced concentration, lower academic performance, and decreased self-confidence, ultimately affecting their education and long-term opportunities.

Solution

The project will renovate and equip a dedicated Girls' Day Support Room at the school. This safe space will allow girls to rest during menstruation, manage menstrual hygiene privately, and access emergency sanitary materials. It will also provide counseling and basic health support when needed. By ensuring privacy hygiene facilities, and support, the project will reduce absenteeism, improve girls' comfort and confidence, and enable them to attend classes regularly and perform better academically

Long-Term Impact

The project will create lasting benefits for girls by improving menstrual hygiene management, dignity, and confidence at school. With access to a safe and supportive space, girls will attend classes more regularly and participate fully in learning. Over time, this will lead to better academic performance, reduced dropout rates, and greater opportunities for girls to complete their education and build a brighter future. It will also promote awareness of girls' health.
