Summary

This year CasaSito is working with 115 youth scholars and 14 teacher scholars, in addition to the parenting groups and workshops in two locations in Guatemala. With every person who walks through our doors, we strive to create a safe and welcoming family environment. Both of our locations are in need of renovations and maintenance to contribute to fulfilling this mission and provide the best possible space for all.

Challenge

In Alta Verapaz, even the largest room we have available is challenging to accommodate larger group activities such as parenting and youth workshops. Our other center is located within Antigua, a UNESCO city, which subjects the building to stricter renovation restrictions. At this center there is no dedicated storage space. As a result, some areas are cluttered with storage boxes, and rows of plastic chairs and folding tables stacked against walls.

Solution

The highest costs are in Alta Verapaz, where expanding the largest room involves relocating the outer wall, extending the roof, and tiling the floor. This work will ensure that the space can comfortably accommodate scholars and their parents during program activities. In Antigua, building a veranda and creating a small storage room will eliminate the clutter in spaces meant to create a sense of calm and peace, reflecting program activities focused on promoting mental and emotional well-being.

Long-Term Impact

In Alta Verapaz, events and specialist training activities, such as skills training for parents, will not be limited, as was the case with the hairdressing intensive course for family members in 2024. In Antigua (Sacatepequez), the long-term benefits for young people of having a dedicated space to sit in a peaceful, open air environment, wil help to enhance social interactions with their peers and contribute to improved emotional well-being.
