The vulnerable women who are in our residential setting are making good progress. We are pleased. Both rape victims are looking after their babies, there has been good bonding going on. They still have their ups and downs at times, but overall we are very pleased with their progress. One has finished a six months cooking training and has started to bake bread, injera (Ethiopian staple food) and biscuit. She is doing a good job and making profit. The other rape victim who was socially outcasted has been making big progress, she is currently living semi-independent and is able to care for her baby under supervision. We took in a third young women who was raped and is now six months pregnant. She is a mentally slow woman, they are the easy targets!
Vulnerability is not only being abused or raped but this week we were confronted by a different vulnerable woman.
She is married and has five young children. Husband quite a bit older, he used to be in the army but retired from that five years ago. At first things were going well, he was doing business and was making good money. But suddenly he developed mental issues and currently he is not doing anything.....he is at home and he is doing some aimless digging. They can't afford the rent and they have been given some living quarters that are basically not really liveable...The husband is sometimes aggressive towards his wife and others and she can;t leave him on his own. Two older children have moved towards living on the streets during the day and coming back home in the evening, due to lack of food. The other three are to little. We got informed about this situation this week and went to asses the family. We will get a psychiatrist involved to see the issues with the husband. The wife wants to do some small business but with three children at home and a husband who needs so much care, it is challenging. We are going to help this family by providing some finances for the next few months for food, clothing and medical care and asses the possibilities for the woman to do some sort of income generating activity. So where a woman becomes extremely vulnerable, it affects the whole family....they went from middle class to below the poverty line.
Thank you for enabling us to reach out to these vulnerable women so we can try to empower and encourage them as well as supporting their family.
