Amina returned to her village in Idlib after years of displacement, only to find its water network destroyed. Every day is a struggle to get enough water for her family, and even then she can't be sure it is safe to drink. This project will rehabilitate and expand the village water network, bringing safe, reliable water to more than 500 returning families. Working with local partners and community stakeholders, we will make sure the service lasts.
After years of displacement, Amina has returned to her village in Idlib, but access to safe water remains a daily struggle. Once a frontline area, the village's water network was severely damaged, leaving over 500 households dependent on distant, costly or unsafe sources. Children miss school, women bear the greatest burden, and families face increased health risks. Rehabilitating and expanding the network is essential for safe and dignified return.
The project will rehabilitate and expand the village water network, replacing damaged pipes, valves and fittings and extending services to unserved households. Water will be tested and treated to ensure safe drinking water. Sustainability will be strengthened through coordination with local authorities, community leaders and returnee representatives, training local technicians, and establishing a community water committee with women in leadership roles to oversee maintenance and equitable access
With the water network restored and expanded, Amina and more than 500 returning families will gain reliable access to safe water close to home. Time spent collecting water can be redirected to education, livelihoods and rebuilding. Children can attend school regularly, household costs and health risks will decrease, and trained local technicians and a community committee will help ensure the system remains functional and sustainable.
