Improving learning among school children

By Lakshmi | Trustee

Dear Patrons and well wishers,

We thank you for your continued support of our programs:

The project has been workign with slow learner’s where in the Para-Teacher focussed on strengthening the basics among the slow learners. Activities and lessons to improve letter identification, learning sight words, addition and subtraction were given importance. The rationale is to strengthen the basics thereby aiding them make reading and writing easier without mistakes. Students were taught addition, subtraction and multiplication and it has been identified now that 12 out of 22 slow learners can now do subtraction with borrowing. This has further helped show interest among students in doing maths.  During Half-yearly examination the Para-teacher focussed on exam preparation among slow learners by giving them tests and guiding individually in learning memory poem, objective type questions depending upon their learning ability. Later, the para-teacher also prepared materials to be used for forthcoming slow learner’s classes.

Appreciation for slow learners  :  To motivate the students towards learning, the slow learners were rewarded with small gifts, on three categories based on previous month’s performance including Regularity, Homework and Hand writing. Henceforth this reward system shall be carried forward during the next month to sustain interest among the students.

Spelling Competition:  To generate interest among students in learning Tamil and English language, a spelling competition was conducted for all slow learners. For this a specific list of words chosen from their respective text books were given 1 week prior to the competition. The students were also supported in learning the spellings and pronunciation when required.

Spoken English classes:  The Spoken English Trainer continues to handle classes regularly, during which she focused on conversations, role play to improve dialogue exchange between students in a given situation. Materials including flash cards and videos were also used to increase the interest and make the sessions more participative. She also supported the slow learners to prepare for their examinations and worked on materials including ‘Word Wall’ for all classes to strengthen vocabulary and assessments to be implemented in the coming months.
