The fundamental purposes of specialeducation is the optimal development of the students as a skilful free, and purposeful person amd tp enable them to plan and manage their own life and to reach the highest potential as an individual and as a member of society. Indeed, special education has been developed as a highly specialized area of education in order to provide children with exceptionalities with the same opportunities as other children for a meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling life. IN Kalanjiyam adopted schools special educators in the schools have individualized and customised lesson plans according to the learning level for children with special needs. Monitoring their behaviour-al and edu-cational progress has been done on regular basis.
Success story of Evangelin: Evangelin is a class III student. She is the youngest one of her family. Her father works as an electrician in a private company and her mother is a home maker. She has one elder sister studying in Class XII. Evangelin is a child with special needs. Being iden-tified with Down syndrome at the time of her birth , she has been associated with Kalanjiyam for the past 3 years. Since, she was very shy and introvert child , the special educator found it very challenging to associate with her during class. At the very beginning she used to sit idle in the class, but she will never miss her special classes. Then the special educator identified that she was interested in playing with the ball. For the first few days the special educator started playing with the ball and found a way to make the child interact in class. Later using the same play way method, the spe-cial educator started teaching her alphabets and numbers orally. By the time she started to be more interactive with the special educator and started to like the special class as well. Her in-volvement in class room also started to im-prove, her class teacher was also very much sur-prised to see her improvement and interaction with the fellow students in the class room.
Evangelin goes for occupational therapy (OT) classes to NIPMED (National Institute for Em-powerment of Persons with Multiple Disabili-ties) she goes for OT classes twice a week. Her mother being a constant support to her, tirelessly makes effort in her child’s im-provement. Evangelin’s development is re-markable day to day. She now takes much inter-est in all the ac-tivities including reciting rhymes, numbers, alpha-bets and Tamil letters. Her favourite time pass is danc-ing. She loves to dance and aspires to become a teacher, getting her inspiration from the special educator.
