Pineapple farming is rarely practiced yet emerging as a powerful driver of agricultural transformation among rural farmers of Hoima District, where growing production and rising incomes are improving livelihoods and creating new economic opportunities for local communities.

Pineapple cultivation is a more profitable and sustainable source of income. A single pineapple plant can stay alive in the garden up to 7 years, producing multiple fruits over its lifetime. Pineapple cultivation is tireless and time saving.

Amooti a farmer in Buwjahya East in Hoima says the crop has become a life-changing opportunity for her. “Before growing pineapples, I struggled to provide for my family. Today, I can afford school fees, supplement to the basic  needs of my family and even save money. I harvest on and off season. Customers find me here. I do not look for them”

In September 2024, a group of women from Bujwahya and Kiraira were trained by SHCAN in vegetable and fruits growing among the fruits were pineapples. They were trained on how to keep gardens health especially for pineapples. They were encouraged ensure the plants are in well-draining and plants receive fully sunshine. And Space plants adequately to prevent fungal issues and monitor for pests.

“I went back to my garden after the training and acted according and since then I have never applied pesticides and fertilizers and my pineapple plantation is healthy. It takes less of my time which allows me divert my time and effort in growing food crops, this has enhanced food security in my home.” She narrates

Her experience reflects a wider trend in this community, where more women are actively participating in income-generating agriculture and contributing to household development.
