This project will train rural women and girls in Kitoba, Hoima district, Uganda, in sustainable organic vegetable farming. The women from three villages will create Women Vegetable Clubs (WVC). They will receive comprehensive training, high-quality seeds and tools, and ongoing support. Through the project, women and girls will address food insecurity, diversify their incomes, and improve their families' nutrition. The project will contribute towards gender equality in local communities.
Rural women in Hoima district of Uganda face significant challenges including living in male-dominated communities. Though women play a crucial role in family welfare and income generation, it is men who receive the family payments. This increases the risks of violence and abuse, and lack of access to finance and critical resources. As a result, rural women remain marginalized, with limited options to earn their own money. They are therefore unable to contribute to community development.
The women will receive training in modern, sustainable, and organic vegetable farming techniques which will enable them to grow high-quality vegetables that they can sell all year round. The Women Vegetable Clubs will foster a sense of community and collective empowerment. By generating their income, the women will gain financial independence and a stronger voice in household and community decisions. Upon success, the model will be replicated in other villages, thus amplifying its impact.
The project will lead to better nutrition in the community, enhanced food security and empowered rural women in Kitoba, Hoima district. The women will be able to generate sustainable income, improving their livelihoods and enabling them to invest in their families' health and education. The project will also contribute to greater gender equality in the community. Moreover, the model can be replicated in other villages, therefore impacting a larger population.
