25.10.2010: Every child has a right to attain education irrespective of his gender, race, social status, religion and so forth. The disastrous flooding in Pakistan has displaced over 20 million people from their homes, destroyed acres of land, and completely wiped out all infrastructures such as roads, houses, and schools etc. Hence, clearly the academic future of the youth is at stake here since there are next to no schooling facilities present in the flood affected districts. Equipped with over 20 years of experience in education, Fatima Memorial System along with its coalition partners has successfully undertaken a thorough need assessment in Dera Ghazi Khan. In a locality known as Haebat Mastui in the region of DG Khan, a local philanthropist Mr. Malik Saeed has donated the building which will serve as the school premises. In the first phase, our knowledgeable team of professionals visited the area and conducted in-depth interviews with locals regarding their needs and requirements in terms of education. All this data has been compiled, and on its basis a detailed project plan was prepared which is explained in detail below. In the first step, a team of eight teachers from the selected region were called into the Central Relief cell in Lahore. An extensive two day training based on topics such as Teaching Methodology and Classroom management etc was conducted in collaboration with Eisaar Trust to brush up on their teaching skills. Overall, the training proved to be a great success and 5 teachers out of the 8 were also selected to be a part of the faculty. Coming towards the second and third step of the project plan, the teachers were assigned with the responsibility of identifying potential students, and creating an awareness regarding the school in their respective localities. Furthermore, the chosen teachers were then asked to register children for the school. At this point in time, the teachers have been successful in registering over 200 children. In the fourth step, teachers conducted detailed interviews with registered children and their parents. This step is currently in progress. The interviews were mainly done to shortlist around 150 children out of the total registered. Moreover, it was also done to ascertain the amount of interest in the school depicted by the families. In the initial stages, it has been decided to admit approximately 150 students into nursery classes. Four sections will be made with 30-35 children, and these will be tended to by 1 head teacher, and 5 teaching assistants. Step five revolves around the actual implementation of this school, and it is fully intended to begin these nursery classes by the first week of November 2010. Detailed work plans shall be circulated to the teachers which will updated from time to time. Our collaborating partner Eisaar Trust shall be training teachers and also providing stationary and books to all students.
