Rebuilding Children's Live after the Chennai Flood

With support from You and GlobalGiving , we successfully launched third phase of Rebuilding Children's Live after the Chennai Flood by providing Life Skills & Disaster Mitigation Workshops for children of Vyasarpadi Slums in Chennai, India during October 2016. The first workshop saw 40 children actively participated learning about disasters, science being disaster management and were engaged in activiteis designed for acquiring skills required for handling the situation intelligently at the time of crisis.

120 more children will be participating in similar workshops during the summer vacation in Vyasarpadi, Chennai. The workshops are scheduled for, during the months of April - May 2017. Four workshops are planned and will be attended by 40 children each.

The 2^nd workshop had covered 40 children between the age group of 11-14 years of age & the 3^rd workshop had covered 40 children between the age group of 15-18 years.

The fourth workshop was spread across two days and was completed in September 2017. The programmes were titled, ‘Children on Empowerment and Preparedness for Disaster Situations’. The participants were the children from our SCSTEDS project (Slum Children Sports Talent & education Development), Vyasarpadi, Chennai, who were the ones affected by the Chennai Floods in December 2015. There were 40 children who attended the workshop from the age group of 15-18 years. The children had shared their experience and satisfaction with the facilitating team about participating in the workshops.

Some of the key points covered during the session were:

• The various elements, including effective use & knowledge of science, involved in the preparedness to face natural disasters
• The preparedness that the children need to develop to face the life challenges and struggles in the given situations.
• The personal development goals that they need to develop to face challenges in life; this was covered extensively for the girl children.
• The awareness on their rights & development stages of life to help them grow up with that knowledge and live a more confident childhood.

 Thanks to your support, CRY has worked in the flood relief and rescue operations in 2015 - 2016 in the Vyasarpadi slum area. And now following the aims of the project in phase 3. Aim was to empower the children of Vyasarpadi through critical life skills concepts towards a free and emancipated childhood even in the most difficult of situations. To build awareness among the critical stakeholders like parents and community on preventive measures to ensure child safety, protection and emotional as well as physical health in disaster.
