As of April 2026, the reconstruction is well underway! The girls’ boarding house is nearly finished thanks to your generous donations and those of our corporate partners. The construction on the girls’ boarding house will be complete in May 2026 with the doors opening in September 2026 for the new school year. We have now finished the plumbing and electrical work in the girls boarding house, and we are currently installing the façade, the windows and flooring (see pictures below). Following on from this it will be time for painting and installation of the doors! The only part of the girls boarding house the is unfunded currently is the elevator and its instillation. We plan to install an elevator, allowing for full accessibility. This will enable girls with reduced mobility to access communal spaces such as the libraries which sit on the first and second floor. Although we will be able to open the doors without the elevator, we truly hope to gain this funding prior to opening, allowing all the girls equal opportunity to learn, live and flourish in a place that will become their second home.
With regards to the boys’ boarding house, we have completed the main structural work, the waterproofing of the building and the partial installation of windows. However, the boarding house is far from complete. We are still seeking 500 000 euros in order to complete the project and open the doors to 254 of the poorest boys in the region. Once we receive the necessary funding the next step will be to complete the window installation, plumbing and electrical work. Following on from this we will begin working on the façade, flooring, walls and painting.
Additionally, once the construction of the buildings is complete, we will be seeking funding for the landscaping, multi-sports field and playground that will lie between the boarding houses. This area is vital to the holistic wellbeing of the children.
Although the doors are yet to open to the children, this project has already made a great impact in the area, adding to the economy and creating many employment opportunities. It is vital to us that all construction workers on the project are from the Asni area, and the materials are sourced locally when possible. We aim to make a positive impact on the area at every phase of this project and for many decades to come.
Last week Mohammed, who is from the small village where Amis des Ecoles first began, visited the site. When we first met him, he was struggling with a server heart condition which resulted in difficulty walking and breathing, meaning he was unable to attend school. With our help Mohammed came to Casablanca to receive heart surgery and now he has finished school, has a fulltime job, a wife and three children! It was amazing to have Mohammed visit the new boarding houses and hear him talk so passionately about all the young boys and girls that will be helped with this project! His visit truly reminded us of the life-changing impact our work can have.
