Empowering Parents, Building Readers: Parent Education in Monterey

By Jason Little | Executive Director

A Report for Our Donors and Supporters

At Read to Me Project, we know that literacy begins long before a child opens their first book. It starts in the home — with parents who are empowered to be their child's first and most important teacher. That’s why we are proud to partner in delivering bilingual parent education classes at Ord Terrace Elementary’s Saturday Academy in Monterey County. Each session is carefully designed to support early literacy, school readiness, and healthy development. Topics include:

  • I Am My Child’s First Teacher

  • My Child’s Growth and Development

  • Healthy Body: Nutrition & Physical Activity

  • Power of Words

  • Social-Emotional Well-Being

  • My Child, Media, and Technology

  • Champions for Our Children’s Future

These sessions help caregivers turn everyday moments into learning opportunities — no books required. Parents learn how to build their child’s vocabulary and cognitive skills in natural, culturally relevant ways.

Why It Matters

  • 85% of brain development occurs in the first five years of life

  • Children who hear more words early in life are better prepared for school and lifelong learning

  • Parent education strengthens families and closes opportunity gaps before kindergarten

Thanks to your support, we are reaching families where they are in schools, in their language, and in community. Together, we are building a future where every child has the words they need to thrive.
