The first quarter of the 2026 Raise-A-Child Rays of Hope Campaign has reflected strong progress in delivering holistic support to vulnerable children and their families. The programme is currently supporting a total of 311 children, ensuring that each child receives not only educational assistance but also critical health and social support.
A key milestone this quarter was the completion of the annual health checks, which were extended to include siblings. Of the 295 children assessed, 121 were referred for further medical attention, primarily for eye care, dental concerns, and nutritional support. Notably, only one child presented with a significant heart condition, allowing for early intervention and care planning.
In strengthening household resilience, 15 unemployed mothers were selected to participate in a 20-week sewing and entrepreneurship course. This initiative aims to equip them with practical skills to access income-generating opportunities and improve family stability.
Educational support remained a central focus, with all children receiving essential school stationery. In addition, learners from Grade 1 to 9 were each allocated a tutor in English and Mathematics to enhance academic performance.
One of these mothers is Thandi. For years, she relied on irregular income to support her two children in the programme. Quiet but determined, she joined the sewing course with little prior experience. Just weeks in, she proudly shared her first completed garment—a school uniform for her daughter. For Thandi, it was more than sewing; it was dignity restored. For her children, it meant stability, confidence, and hope.
Overall, the Raise-A-Child campaign continues to provide comprehensive, child-centred support that promotes wellbeing, education, and long-term sustainability.
