The Raise-A-Child initiative allows businesses and individuals to support and empower the youth of Alexandra through a monthly donation of just ZAR2,000. This program allows Rays of Hope to ensure the basic, fundamental needs of a child are taken care of, so that they can focus on what's matters most - enjoying their childhood. Your contributions can change a child's life and allows us to provide support 50 children in the form of food, clothing and schooling for children aged 2-18 years old.
Alexandra is one of South Africa's oldest and poorest Townships with almost 1 million residents living well below the breadline. The community is ravaged by poor living conditions, drug and alcohol abuse and under-equipped schools. Most children can't read for meaning by 7th Grade. Rays of Hope has taken a holistic approach to tackling the needs of our children. We offer Education Support that includes a nutrition plan, psychosocial support to the entire family and skills development.
The Raise-A-Child campaign makes it possible for everyone to form part of the village that raises our children. A contribution of $116 per month or $1400 per annum, enables us to provide daily meals for the entire family, a monthly home visit and counselling session with a Social Worker, tuition and clothing. This Campaign allows us to provide as many children as possible the support they need to grow physically, emotionally and cognitively and academically to break the cycle of poverty.
In the long run, we see this community breaking the cycle of poverty through a generation that can read, write and count and can exercise emotional intelligence. Through a holistic intervention, the community of Alexandra can develop a generation of educated youth who can become leaders that bring about lasting change.
