NOWPDP, through its program The Rickshaw Project, is helping persons with disabilities overcome the physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent them from availing various opportunities from the society. Through this project, awareness raising sessions would be conducted at educational institutions, workplaces, and public spaces in Karachi; and persons with lower limb impairments would be provided with accessible cycles.
While efforts are being made by different public and private institutions to mainstream persons with disabilities in the society by providing them educational and employment opportunities, various physical and attitudinal barriers still exist that prevent persons with disabilities from availing these opportunities, and hence contribute towards their socio-economic exclusion.
NOWPDP will conduct awareness raising sessions at educational institutions, workplaces, and public spaces in Karachi to dispel the prevailing misconceptions about persons with disabilities. Additionally, accessible cycles will be provided to persons with disabilities in Karachi to remove the physical barriers which limit them to the confines of their homes, thus enabling them to step out of their homes and explore various educational and employment opportunities which eluded them previously.
Changing the mindsets of the different members of the society would contribute towards creating an inclusive environment, in which persons with disabilities can excel. Meanwhile, providing those who are confined to their homes with an opportunity (mobility solution) to step out and explore the various opportunities would be a significant step towards their socio-economic inclusion. Ultimately, both these activities would contribute towards mainstreaming persons with disabilities in our society.
