NOWPDP aims to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities through innovative hand-controlled rickshaws, promoting the right to work for all. Additionally, they will be provided with skill training and health insurance. Through this project, awareness raising sessions would also be conducted at educational institutions, workplaces, and public spaces in Karachi, Pakistan; to break the down the social and physical barriers that hold people with disability apart from society.
Persons with Disabilities in Pakistan face multiple barriers to entering employment, as they are often overlooked due to attitudinal and infrastructural discrimination. These barriers have been set in place for a long time, without any solution, especially considering the large population of persons with disabilities in Pakistan and other developing countries.
NOWPDP provides retrofitted Rickshaws and appropriate road-skill and mechanical training to people with disabilities. The rickshaws then provide them with an opportunity to make a living and become providers for their families. Additionally, NOWPDP also provides protection for our Rickshaws and its drivers with insurance.
Changing the mindsets of the different members of the society would contribute towards creating an inclusive environment, in which persons with disabilities can excel. Meanwhile, providing those who are confined to their homes with an opportunity (mobility solution) to step out and explore the various opportunities would be a significant step towards their socio-economic inclusion. Ultimately, both these activities would contribute towards mainstreaming persons with disabilities in our society.
