In Kerala, India, the district of Idukki, a place famous for people who work hard, suffered a massive devastation in August 2018. The extent of it was not much known to the outside world since communication and transportation facilities were so badly hit. People dispossessed of all they had, have no place to go back to and no place to build anew. Hilly and inaccessible, Idukki is also an easy target for frequent natural disasters. 

 

Project Punarjani was planned based on these circumsatances to rehabilitate 7 families affected by the flood happened in 2018.

Project Punarjani has been completed and handed over the houses to the beneficiaries on 02/06/2020.

There were 7 houses constructed 

$94,000 collected in total. The project took 18 months to complete.

The houses are being constructed at Lakkattur, Kottayam.

  • Received $500 as donation through Global Giving in September 2019. Which is equivalent to Rs. 34,000. This has helped building 34 square feets of one of the 7 houses.
  • Percentatge of completion is 98 by end of November 2019.
  • Flooring of each house, painting and plumping need to be completed.
  • Painting is under progress.
  • A tube well need to be constructed further for the water availability for the community. This will be donw after the beneficiaries occupy their houses.
  • Construction of 7 houses will be completed by end of December 2019 and will be handed over to the beneficiaries the same month.

Punarjani Project Updates: September 2019

Construction of three of the houses is nearing completion and is Seventy percentage complete. Construction of the other three homes commenced and the Seventh house is entering the construction phase.

Total square feets of construction area remaining : 2100 sq feet.

The construction of the homes is overseen by a group of volunteers. The construction site is Lakattoor, Kerala, India. The seven beneficiary families lost their dwellings in landslides which happened in August 2019. The beneficiary families were selected by Punarjani volunteer committee after face to face interview.

The plan is to complete the construction of all the homes by the first quarter of 2020.
