Working for the right to good mental health
By Michelle Simon | Project Leader
In Spain, one out of every three children and adolescents is at risk of poverty or social exclusion and faces obstacles that hinder their stability and negatively affect their mental health.
In homes exposed to a continuous situation of lack of resources and socioeconomic difficulties, stressful situations are frequently experienced, sometimes chronic stress, which makes children especially vulnerable to mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression or behavioral problems, among others. In addition, in these homes there are fewer resources available to access therapeutic care.
For SOS Children's Villages, prevention, evaluation and early care are key because they make it possible to reduce the psychological effects of the difficulties experienced and avoid future problems. "It is important to point out that this is valid for all children and adolescents, although it is even more important in the case of those in a situation of special vulnerability because they are facing particularly complicated situations.

There is no better place for children than with their family
By Michelle Simon | Project Leader
We seek to reach, through our actions, any corner where children, youth and families need our support to overcome the crisis in which they find themselves, always highlighting the importance of the family remaining united, working with the whole nucleus in an integral way.
Psychological support is framed in prevention and family strengthening, offering guidance and comprehensive support in order to promote the development and autonomy of families.
We work to guarantee the right of children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing the opportunity to grow up in a home where they feel safe, protected and, above all, loved. With the bonds of affection they need to become their best selves. In doing so, we break the cycle of child neglect, violence, abuse and neglect.

We continue to support hundreds of families
By Michelle Simon | Project Leader
Although we are all currently feeling the consequences of the pandemic, the inequalities and vulnerabilities that already existed have determined the specific impact of this crisis in each country, each region and each household. In this sense, Spain faces a bleak scenario in the coming years, with children, youth and families at the epicenter of the catastrophe.
Many children, young people and families need our support in the short, medium and long term due to the situation Spain is facing as a result of the crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The support of the people who accompany us on the road to the fight against inequality is essential for our actions not only to cover a momentary need but to attack the root of the problem and make a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people.
SOS Children's Villages works to make the right to good mental health a reality, for this reason, we have family therapy services in which we develop preventive work to avoid a worsening of risk situations, while helping to improve family relationships, providing them with the necessary tools. We also work with families promoting the improvement of their parenting skills and a protective educational model based on positive discipline, which has a direct impact on the mental health of their children.
