We’ve had some great results at Roko 20 with our pupils achieving some fantastic things both inside and outside the classroom.
Learning came to life for our Grade 4–6 pupils this week with a visit to the Murang’a County Assembly!
As part of their Social Studies lessons our Grade 4-6 pupils explored how Kenya’s devolved system of Government works and saw first-hand how local decisions are made and how the County Government serves the community.
For our pupils, being able to experience something they have been learning about in the classroom makes a real difference. It helps turn lessons into something they can see, experience and understand for themselves.
Growing More Than Vegetables!
Our Year 4 Enterprise Group, The Farmers, have been putting their business skills into practice. Using the small amount of money they have saved the group went to the local market, bought seedlings and planted them. They will nurture the crops and eventually sell what they grow.
It’s a simple project but it teaches the children some really valuable lessons about teamwork, responsibility, saving, growing food and running a small business.
We’re looking forward to seeing how their little enterprise develops!
Learning through recycling
Our Year 4 Enterprise Group recently took the plastic they had collected to a local recycling centre.
The children were fascinated to see how the plastic is sorted by colour, chopped up and melted before being made into small pellets for reuse.
As well as learning about recycling and caring for the environment, their collection earned the group Ksh 980, which they can put towards their small enterprise. A great example of learning, teamwork and making a difference!
Chess
Congratulations to one of our Grade 6 and Grade 1 students for emerging as the Overall Champion and Silver Medal winner at the Chess Tournament in Murang'a. Both have won a full German language scholarship worth Ksh 87,500!
Celebrating Effort and Progress
It isn’t only competition winners who deserve recognition. We’re also incredibly proud when our pupils show determination and make progress.
A Grade 10 student was recognised for her neatness and resilience and given the opportunity to visit Zetech University where she could explore different career and education opportunities for her future. While another Form 3 student, was recognised for her excellent academic improvement.
These experiences can be incredibly important for young people, helping them see possibilities beyond their immediate surroundings and encouraging them to aim high.
Sunshine Power for the Girls!
Thanks to a generous volunteer, we’ve installed solar panels at the girls’ boarding house, providing hot water for their daily showers.
Previously, water was heated over wood fires, so this simple change makes life easier for the girls while reducing the need for firewood. The Kenyan sunshine now does the work!
The same generosity also provided every sponsored child with a pair of smart black leather school shoes. A wonderful practical gift that the children really appreciate.
Recently, volunteers helped with maintenance and built a new chicken shed, improving our facilities while showing pupils practical construction skills.
