Roko 20 Update

By Tracey Neale-Ferreira | Project Leader

Introducing outdoor reading lessons
Introducing outdoor reading lessons

Roko 20 is celebrating its 10th anniversary and we have a lot to be grateful for.

Thanks to you and your support we have been able to continue improving our work offering the best education to those children who have had such a difficult start in life.

Thanks to our team at Roko 20 who is dedicated to our pupils' success.

Academic performance

Everyone at Roko 20 is so proud of our Grade 6 pupils who graduated from Primary School and achieved 1st position in the National Assessments in CRE and Social Studies.

Overall we came 1st in the category “Best improved” compared to the previous year.

We also ranked as position 15 out of 65 schools in the Murang'a East County.   A terrific result.

Additionally in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) one of our pupils took 2nd place as the 'highest achiever' out of 10 schools in our zone.

We are delighted with these results which is a reflection on the hard work and dedication of our team of teachers and staff at Roko 20 Academy.

We are so proud of one our Grade 7 pupils who loves to draw and who had his 'five minutes of fame'.  He demonstrated initiative and sent his drawing of the Presenter of a children's TV programme called "WEEGA KID'S" to the TV company which impressed them enough to show it live on their weekly show.

We provided one of our G7 girl leavers with a scholarship to further her eduation in secondary school.  At her new school she joined the Mathematics and Chess Clubs.  She qualified to enter the Murang'a County Maths and Chess competitions and we are delighted that she came 3rd.

Girls Boarding

We have 17 girls boarding at school who are all doing so well.  After consulting with 3 of the girls about why they like boarding at school.  They had this to say ...

  • "At school there's enough food, at home I can go some days without food"
  • "At school we wear shoes but at home there are no shoes" .
  • "At school we have time for reading but at home there is no reading"

For the girls, simply having regular meals helps to focus the mind on their studies.

A boarding facility for boys at risk is something that we hope one day to have.

Water

We are pleased to say that we now have a regular supply of irrigation water.  Shortages were due to the faulty pipes that were laid down in the area.  Now that its back we are preparing the land to grow more fruit and vegetables for our lunch programme.

After recently giving a presentation to a local Rotary Club we are hopeful of being donated enough funds to purchase another 10,000 litre water tank to harvest water during the rainy season giving us security during the long dry season.

Volunteers

We appreciate the support received from a number of volunteers early on this year who assisted with so many activities including one-on-one reading support, arts and crafts and sports.  An introduction to outdoor reading really helped our pupils during the hot dry season.

Child Sponsorships

Sponsoring a child to an education at Roko 20 costs just £18 a month for standard sponsorship and £28 for full sponsorship.

Income received from monthly sponsorships is our 'bread and butter' and we could not survive without it.  We need your help to spread the word of Roko 20 and invite your family/friends/colleagues to sponsor one of the 44 children who are on the waiting list to be sponsored.

The impact of receiving a full time education at Roko 20 is immense and its not just about academics.  We provide an improvement to a quality of life by providing food, promoting good health, self confidence and life skills.

Here are a couple of testimonials from people who already sponsor a child

"We have loved sponsoring a girl pupil at Roko 20. We started all those years ago mainly because we were touched by your unwavering dedication to make a difference in these young children's lives through Roko 20.
Running a school ourselves, we believe in the power of education to help children grow and remain curious. It was and is humbling to see what a difference such a relatively small amount of money can make in these children's lives.
Good luck.  Roko 20 is making a difference, be proud. Xx"

"Hello all who are interested in Sponsorship. I have been sponsoring for some years now with both World Vision and Roko 20. I feel it is a very self rewarding thing to do. It gives me pleasure to know and have news of my children and how they improve through my donations to enable them to be educated and also to be fed and clothed. I feel closer to Roko 20 because the founders of the children’s school keep in touch regularly with videos and updates which enable me to feel that I am there with them. I only wish I had known about this scheme when I was younger so that I could have been more hands on with their school. Please don’t hesitate if you are thinking about it. Give these children the chance to be clothed and fed with education and life skills thrown in.
One can visit too if they wish to help out and see for themselves what Roko 20 is all about. Just as little as £5 per week is so welcome and gives these children so much, it brings food, clothes, happiness and education to these children. Try it, don’t hesitate. Giving is receiving. Good luck. "

Please contact roko20academy@gmail.com for further information on how to sponsor a child to an education at Roko 20 Academy.

It leaves me to say a huge thank you to all of you for your support without which we would not be able to achieve such positive results.

Asante Sana!
