This project continues to provide the needed curriculum textbooks for the students of Carolyn A Miller School in Paynesville, Liberia. The school remains committed to providing free and quality education to the thousands of less fortunate kids in Paynesville, Liberia from kindergarten to 12th grade, and the school is currently delivering free education to over 600 of the poorest children in Liberia who do not have any means of acquiring textbooks and other educational supplies.
This project got started on the refugee camp in 2003 and helped to rebuild the lives of the less fortunate and unaccompanied refugee kids, many of whom were orphans. This is a journey that we started in 2003, and we continue to move on, gradually developing the educational infrastructure that was damaged during the 14 years of civil war in Liberia.
The latest development, we have acquired additional 50 pieces of textbooks from our West Africa sister country Ghana for our students. The use of these textbooks has been very helpful to our students for the past two years. Now students have had good and improved results in the WASSCE examination.
We are grateful to our donors, friends, supporters and the GlobalGiving team for the love and support for the work we are doing in Liberia. Our textbook project has been a very important project that our students started benefiting from.
This has always been a very long road or journey to get every class from K1 - 12th Grade at the Carolyn A Miller School the whole set of curriculum books. This has been a very difficult journey in that we have to order the books from the Neighboring country in Ghana West Africa.
The prescribed textbooks are not written nor published in Liberia. Donations are starting to trickle in but going very slow but notwithstanding, VAAFD has started ordering a couple of the textbooks soon to be in a position to start stockpiling books and re-stocking the library. It's our prayers that goodwill individuals, corporations or any group with the desire to support this project, we want to get a set of textbooks that will help them in their learning.
It is so sad that textbooks are not a priority in the Liberia education system. This will affect the future leader of our country. We think this is the time that we work to make sure that the right education is provided for the future leaders of Liberia.
It will be shocking to find out that a Liberian family cannot afford to buy a set of textbooks for a child, and due to this reading has been a very challenging thing for students in many schools in Liberia.
That's why VAAFD have made these resources a priority and have set up this project focusing on reading.
There is a serious textbook crisis in Liberia and this is limiting our students, stating just how desperate the situation is right now for Liberians.
