The Al Otro Lado team is continuing to address the challenge of COMAR (Mexico’s refugee agency) not being able to provide translation services for non-Spanish speaking refugees and asylum seekers in Mexico.
Thanks to the generous donors involved in this campaign so far, we have partnered with Respond Crisis Translation, as well as mobilized our own volunteer interpreters, to provide interpretation services for 127 asylum seekers in the past 3 months. These interpretation sessions took place in 18 languages, including Arabic, Bengali, Creole, Dari, English, Farsi, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, and Dutch.
Al Otro Lado helped asylum seekers schedule COMAR eligibility interviews and screened for those who needed essential interpretation support to be able to effectively attend the interviews. Without this language support, these people would be left stranded in Mexico with no support or path towards residency.
