Provide language access for 308 migrants in Mexico

Summary

When Trump shut down asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border, thousands of linguistically isolated refugees were left stranded in Mexico. Without legal status, they risk detention, exploitation, and denial of basic services. Al Otro Lado and Respond Crisis Translation have stepped in to provide interpretation, ensuring that linguistically isolated refugees can navigate the Mexican immigration system, secure legal status, and build long-term stability- proving that aqui hay suenos tambien.

Challenge

The U.S. border closure has left thousands stranded in Mexico. Non-Spanish speaking asylum seekers are especially vulnerable, as COMAR, Mexico's refugee agency, lacks capacity to serve them. Without interpretation, families cannot secure legal status-blocking access to work, housing, medical care, education, and other basic rights essential to survival and stability.

Solution

Al Otro Lado and Respond Crisis seek $75,000 to expand interpretation for non-Spanish speaking asylum seekers, ensuring fair access to refugee status in Mexico. With a network of 100+ volunteer linguists and expert coordination, this project will provide trauma-informed interpretation for over 300 asylum seekers, bridging an urgent language gap that currently prevents them from accessing protection and services.

Long-Term Impact

Interpretation is not just translation-it ensures asylum seekers' voices are heard with clarity and dignity. Trauma-informed interpretation reduces re-traumatization, builds trust, and allows families to navigate complex legal processes. By removing language barriers, this project helps children and families gain legal status, restore stability, and access essential services-laying a foundation for long-term safety and resilience.
