Project Report | Feb 12, 2020
25 new students, and new equipment for them

By Veronica Bova | Volunteer

Le Tonlé training center is a social enterprise which provides vocational training in the hospitality sector to economically and socially disadvantaged youth in Northeast Cambodia. The goal of the unique center is to equip young people with professional skills in the tourism sector, so as to enable them to have access to a successful career in tourism and hospitality. In addition, to receiving training in theoretical and practical skills, the students at Le Tonlé develop their capacity to work in a team, their English language skills, communication skills, as well as their confidence in the workplace.

Le Tonlé training center is recruiting and providing education for those who are left behind, and they drop off school because of the economic situation of the family. In the rural areas of Cambodia the main activity is farming, so families rely on agriculture for the most part to generate income for the household. Unfortunately, climate change is having an adverse impact on farming, so many families are living on low incomes and cannot afford to send their children to school.

Le Tonlé training center is providing free education for youth in Kratie Province. Many young people see the hospitality and tourism training program as a chance for a better future. Acquiring skills to enable them to have a reliable income, with some individuals (who had completed the training and are in employment) even sending up to 60% of their salary back home to their villages. Le Tonle training center, has a dual benefit, on one side, it provides skills to young people to enable them to find work in hospitality so as to ensure a better future for the next generations. On the other side, they guarantee additional income to the rural communities that can help in implementing the life conditions of the families, back home.

In the past three months, 26 students have graduated from Le Tonlé training center, and 22 of these students have already had work. It is important to underline that six of our students have now been employed as receptionists, housekeepers, waitresses and as a cook helper in Le Tonlé Guesthouse and restaurant, while 10 of the students managed to find work at NAGA hotel in Phnom Penh, in Cambodia. This is possible thanks to our trainers’ hard work in constantly looking for partnerships within the hospitality sector.

Moreover, after two months of active recruitment, on 1st December 25 new students have started the hospitality program. The new students had an orientation week and they were welcomed with an opening day celebration, which included previous students, new students’ families, and tourism enterprises from the area.

Finally, Le Tonle also received funding from The Woman’s international group, Cambodia, this funding gave Le Tonlé training center the chance to provide new uniforms, two computers and a billing machine for the center. The newly acquired equipment will be used to train our students to use proper equipment, so they acquire the knowledge to work in high-rank enterprises.
